What should we do about Targetting?

If you tackle a guy and your helmets touch, you might get ejected from the game. Tough situation for coaches and players to practice and prepare for, all the way down to the high school ranks.
I like that it's reviewable, but I think an easy way to overturn one is if the ball carrier lowers his head first, then the defender has every right to lower his head. Remove shoulder contact from the entire equation, make it head and neck area only. And no ejection unless the same player gets two in one game, like tech fouls in basketball.
Is this agreeable?

I believe with wers bang bang plays with no intent to headhunt and happen on every inside run play.
I also think at leat one of those had the wr target the dback.

It’s simple. Keep your head up in a tackle. Don’t lead with the crown of your helmet. While I agree a lot of targeting calls are silly, most kids are taught to tackle correctly in pee wee football.

The rule should be removed in its entirety. We already have a penalty for illegal hits or flagrant attempts to injure. It's called "unnecessary roughness."

Addendum:
No more carry-over suspensions. If you get tossed from the game, first play or last play of the game, you are out for the game, but should never carry over to the next game. If it's something particularly egregious that warrants further suspension, the league office should deal with those on a case by case basis, but it shouldn't be automatic.

Both of those the Texas player put his head down slower was no choice except to just let the guy run by?

Get rid of it. Stupid and unnecessary rule.

1. Targeting was never intended to be an exclusively defensive penalty. Have you ever seen offensive targeting called?
2. There should be tiers based on perceived intent regarding the decision to eject a player vs enforce a penalty. Ejection is excessive unless it is egregious with intent.
3. On the topic of intent — if a player “targets” another player’s head with their helmet & lunges… that is intent. There is such a thing as incidental helmet to helmet contact, and those cases where the ball carrier shifts after the tackling motion has begun… there should not be ejection IMO.

spearing is a legit penalty
"targeting" is a myth
"launching" is a myth
helmet to helmet happens every play of every game from Peewee to NFL

I still think it’s funny the Florida player got targeting and ejected for going head first into our WR’s butt. Any tackle that can break a neck gets flagged on the defender now.

Didn’t know that, not sure I’ve ever seen it called.

You gotta start calling offensive players for targeting. The idea to to play like you dont have a helmet on and that your head isnt a weapon. If a runner initiates contact to the head with his helmet, it should be a penalty.
The two targeting calls on Georgia, I just honestly dont see how the defender avoids it...because the runner was the one who led with the crown of the helmet

#1 Stop applying it to players who aren't defenseless.
I'd rather get rid of it, but them throwing it on people trying to tackle a player who is running the ball is just idiotic.

Agree on all counts. Ejections are unique in that they’re meant to shame/scold, and most of the time there is zero intent. And, you can do a lot of shameful behavior and still just get penalized yardage. The carrier often does lower his head and it never even gets remarked upon by the announcers, because I guess the defender is just supposed to bend his neck impossibly far back and get his sternum split for daring to tackle him.

We’ve had RBs called for targeting in the past unloading on someone on the run. You guys never got that flag before?

Easy. Adopt the NFL rule. Targeting is a personal foul, 15 yard penalty, and no ejection.
It’s too easy of a solution.
