What makes a football team relevant?

I see people throw this around a lot, and depending on the context it seems to mean different things.
People say.........."Your team hasn't been relevant since ________!"
I was just wondering...what makes a team relevant?
Is it number of games won in a season?
Last SEC Championship?
Last National Championship?
Last Bowl win?
How long does said relevancy last? One season? Two? 10? 20?

Depends on the expectations of the fanbase.

It depends on the subject matter of the conversation; is the team being discussed? If so, it is relevant.

Nice question Dawgslife. I hope you didn’t expect to get a definitive answer here on the Rant. The answer of course is whatever fits their agenda for that particular season.

I think it’s all subjective.
Since we are Georgia fans, I think we believe UGA was relevant this season, and for many of the years during Richt tenure, but would agree with most others that the Dawgs were irrelevant on a national stage for 20 years prior to Richts arrival.
Fans of our rivals, such as Tech and more specifically Auburn, continue to say we haven’t been relevant since 1980, and point to more recent championships for their schools, while ignoring that both of those have had more individual years of irrelevance during the same time frame.
Aubies especially like to point to the 37 years since Georgias last National Championship, while ignoring the fact that Auburn went 52 years between NC’s. They will say, but Auburn got screwed in 83’, which is probably true...and had an undefeated probation season in the 90’s, and an undefeated season in 2004, where they were never considered...and expect everyone to accept that Auburn could very well have 3 more NC’s in that 52 year drought.
Then they want to discard the idea that UGA was very close in 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 as just UGA fans bringing bs “almost” seasons to the table to determine relevance.
Most of the rest are just trolling whichever team seems to be the flavor of the week and will say anyone short of Bama has been irrelevant for X number of years.

If your team is seriously competing for conference championships or beating teams that are seriously competing for conference championships, then your team is “relevant”.

On an LSU site, beating LSU makes everyone relevant for at least a week. And the refs. They're usually mentioned a lot too.

Being able to beat Bama consistently

Rings...the bigger the more relevant.

So if you have a ton of threads started about you school on tRant, you are relevant?
Could be, actually.

I was mainly curious. I see a lot of people call other programs "not relevant", and was wondering about what it means, exactly.
I have seen it in reference to Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, LSU...almost every fan base on here. It seems like it is up to the person who is saying it....which basically means nothing.

I kind of feel the same way. Of course, some would argue that a team is only relevant if they are relevant on a national level, but things can get even murkier on that level. I mean, OSU won their conference but didn't go to the playoffs, just as Penn State the year before. And then the PAC 12 Champ has been left out and the BIG 12 champ has been left out.
I guess i have seen it stated so much that I started thinking about it, and thought it might be something interesting to hash out.

Nobody does that....consistently. I mean, Auburn has had stretches, for sure, but that rivalry seems to be much like Georgia Florida.....one wins for awhile and then the other one wins for awhile.
By the way...this thread was in no way a dig at any particular fan base or team.

Careful how you use that word.

Obviously there are many factors but it boils down to what have you done for me lately aka contending for the NC? In today's college football arena teams that make it to the playoffs are relevant while teams that don't are on the outside looking in.
A good example of this demarcation was USC winning the Pac12 championship ranked #10 but not being selected to the playoffs. And Ohio St. winning the Big1G Championship but with 2 losses (one bad loss to Iowa), OSU was also not selected for the playoffs and therefore was not relevant.
