The PAC and it isn't even close. The SEC is more on par with the Big 12 when you look at the entire athletic conference. There just aren't a whole bunch of options for athletes in the poorer states that represent the SEC, but the recent money from the SEC Network may "transform" the conference.
We could catch the ACC in pretty quick order. It wouldn't take much $$$ to add Wrestling, Men's Soccer, Fencing, Gymnastics (W), Rowing, and Lacrosse (M&W).

The PAC has many more athletic programs. Beach Volleyball, Field Hockey, Gymnastics (M&W), Lacrosse (W), Rowing (M&W), Rugby, Volleyball (M), Water Polo (M&W), and Wrestling.

The Big Ten is 2nd with Hockey, Lacrosse (M&W), Gymnastics (M&W), Field Hockey, Soccer (M&W), Rowing (W), and Wrestling.

The ACC is probably 3rd with the additions of Fencing, Wrestling, Lacrosse (M&W), Soccer (M&W),and Rowing.

Take a look at the baseball, softball and gymnastics rankings and rethink that point.

Do you have any idea how dominant Arizona, UCLA, Arizona State et al have been over the years in softball? Clearly not if you made this post.

The Pac-12 also has 1/3 of the teams (UCLA and Utah) that have won national titles in gymnastics.

Now, look at every other sport...

It amazes me at how many team names pop up during March Madness that I never hear of during the rest of the year. Teams like Northern Iowa, Austin Peay and Holy Cross. Yet, the powerful and rich SEC can barely scratch up enough teams to send on a yearly basis. I just don't understand how we can so bad as a conference in one of the most popular sports in America.

Well,

We are good at football (5 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at baseball (7 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at softball (9 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at women's gymnastics (8 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at men's golf (8 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at men's tennis (6 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are good at women's tennis (9 of the top 25 teams are SEC)
We are decent at most other sports

Pretty strong resume if you ask me.

So, on the West coast the PAC 12 is king in all sports. In the rest of country the SEC in football, the ACC in basketball, the Big Ten in all of the above but one step down are what people watch.

SEC is best in football, baseball, track and field, softball, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, golf, etc. The Pac 10 can have their water polo teams.

Sports that most schools play and that the SEC is extremely strong if not dominant in recent history:

Football
Baseball
Softball
W Gymnastics
M Track
W Track
M Tennis
W Tennis
M Golf
W Golf
M Swimming
W Swimming

It is at least close.
