Whats is the logic for no buyout at State. I know he has interviewed terribly before, is that the reasoning?

It may be like Saban's. Saban is owed every penny of his contract if he is fired by Alabama but doesn't owe Alabama anything if he decides to leave on his own. Mullen may have something similar. I do remember seeing an article listing the buyouts for SEC coaches and Mullen's was listed as "unknown," which I found odd given his contract as a state employee is public record.

I highly doubt Mullen has a contract with no buyout protection if State fires him. That would be complete incompetence by his agent. However, it wouldn't be unprecedented for him not to have to buy State out of his contract if he leaves for another job.

^This. For example, DJ Durkin's buyout for being fired is much bigger than his buyout to leave for another job.

He doesn't have one. But that still doesn't change that him and Stricklin don't like each other, so don't get too excited.

His buyout is your school getting rid of the current athletic director.

It's a bit odd for sure... This site has a *bad* xerox of his original contract but not the extension from earlier this year:

I don't see any reference to specific figures regarding buy-out either way... just this language:
quote:

the Board of Trustees will fix the time and conditions of termination.

To me, that seems like unless fired for cause, he would be entitled to all of the remainder of his pay on the contract (see 4 year maximum duration in state as possible reason for this... could counteract the inability to provide a longer deal). But definitely a bit of speculation unless there are more documents to read through.

You do? And how did you acquire this knowledge?

He took a team that was obliterated by Ole Miss in 08 to one failed jump pass against LSU being bowl eligible in 09 to destroying Michigan in the Gator bowl in 10. Michigan had all everything Denard Robinson at QB and MSU had Chris Relf who’s only probably D1 offer was from MSU. He has taken Mississippi State to 8 straight bowls. One of those bowls was the Orange in the season that Mississippi State was ranked #1 in the country. He has taken a tight end out of Louisiana and turned him into the NFL Offensive rookie of the year at QB. Currently he has a QB that had one other D1 offer from Middle TN State and has turned him into one of the best QBs in the SEC

If you were an AD, would you give a damn if he didn’t “interview well?” Just what questions answered incorrectly would be considered deal breakers?

It should be crazy high Franklin and Fuente if he really loves it there and doesn’t want to leave.but my guess would be around the range as other coaches at smaller schools .

Don't doubt you but I have not heard this. I could see it for sure but have never heard it.

If I'm not mistaken, Saban's buyout at Alabama has always been 0 on his end...if he leaves on his own.

Starkville is the perfect spot for him. He really seems happy, has good talent, no big pressure for a nattie every year, university likes him. 4 million a year, nice to see a coach stay put.

Mullen and Saban have the same buyout.

If Mullen or Saban are fired, they are owed what is remaining on their contract. Right now, that is roughly $13.5 million for Mullen.

If Mullen wants to go to another school or try his hand at the NFL, its $0.

$4.5 and I expect to see him get an increase after this season, particularly with all the openings. Hoping one of his negotiation tactics will be more money in the assistant coach pool to work with at State.

Mullen is the 14th-highest paid coach in the country at $4.5 million this year, according to USA TODAY’s database, published last week.
