Boosters got too big for their britches. The entire athletic department has been riddled with nepotism for decades. Boosters need to shut their mouths and open their checkbooks for an AD that can do his job. Then they need to get the hell out of the way.

Harsin just needs more time and he’ll turn it around:

Aubrens is like Maggies in Texass, always bragging about their program but not a lot to actually brag about. The theme song for both is, “Just Wait Until Next Year.” All together, second verse…

overpaid for Gus, hired a coach who ran a system without the personnel to run said system, have done everything to undermine said coach starting in the first year on the job, and said new coach being lazy on the recruiting trial. With the transfer portal and removal of transfer penalties making it easy now for players to jump ship, things can fall apart in a hurry. Look at LSU. They went from one of the best seasons ever in the modern era to going 5-5, 6-7 and starting the calendar year with 39 scholarship players. The good thing is, while things can fall apart more quickly due to the reasons stated above, likewise, things can be built back quicker than it used to take as well.

With the support and resources Auburn has, there's no reason this has to set them back for a long time if they sort things out appropriately and make the right hire (assuming Harsin is out)

Remember when we had a coach that thought more about women than the players.

I think …..

They will continue to have problems until the athletic department is run like a business from top to bottom. Right now it’s run like a rural town hall. They may have years of streaky success, but until an AD is empowered to spend a lot of money on a good coach and then allowed to give that coach time to rebuild, they won’t be consistent.

They hired a dumb arse president from Iowa State.

Some dumb arse Board member wants to give Gus a massive raise after knocking off the CFB championship game contenders.

The president hired an inexperienced AD.

The AD hired a coach with a worse record at Arkansas State than the coach they just fired at Auburn.

The easiest answer is Steven Leath.

He extended Gus when he should have been gone. He tried to get rid of Bruce Pearl. He hired an AD out of his league who then made a poorly vetted hire in Harsin. Gus mismanaged our roster to comical levels and Harsin just didn't give a rip about recruiting at all. Honestly, I'm beginning to think the joke about him just taking a paycheck to be fired is either right or this guy is the biggest fraud of a college football coach in FBS.

But Auburn isn't special in this. Jimbo wrecked FSU, Tennessee was a clown show for years, Florida is still in recovery, Miami is struggling to get back on their feet. NIL will cause more issues like this. Saban changed the game from coaching to management and most teams don't have the resources to compete with the few teams that have made that adjustment. Auburn tried to counter with Gus and his scheme. Then the substitution advantage went away. Auburn has to find a way to build a machine rather than trying to find some nebulous solution in left-field schemes and Lombardi-imitators.

Enlighten me then. Explain why Harsin had no support this summer, or the AD getting canned almost immediately this year. Where’s the direction?

That's certainly been an issue at Auburn, mong other places. The good ol' boy system has been an problem at Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, etc. Too many cooks in the kitchen is always going to be a deterrent to progress in an athletic department

Now you look at those programs, and who’s on top, and who’s still trying to get there. Texas can’t get out of their own way administratively, but do you believe there’s any friction between Saban and anyone in the department? The results manifest on the field. Tennessee has only begun to dig out of that hole, so we’ll have to see if that’s true growth or not.

You have to have a strong personality like Saban to dig out of that hole. He did the same thing at LSU too. Saban basically draws a line in the sand and says "we're going to do things my way or not at all. I appreciate your input but your help is not wanted nor needed. All we need is for you to support the program and I'll take the lead. Here's the resources we need from you to be successful." That's what it takes ultimately. When you're always kissing the donors asses, the donors having varying visions for the program, and actually giving them a voice, that's a recipe for disaster.

Obviously, it takes a lot of trust for donors to ever succumb like that and it takes the right coach to give them the faith to convince them to step aside, but honestly that's the only way to change that culture at a major university. Winning clearly cures all, but in many situations, donors can't get out of the coach's way from the onset to even allow him to prove the coach's way works.
