I agree with a lot that has been mentioned. Fulmer's staff from late 90's departing, good hires by other SEC programs, Fulmer losing his fastball etc. But Lane leaving after 1 year, in mid January, really hurt. He had put a little bit of spark in the fan base and program. It was like 20 days before signing day, before there was an early signing day. Too late in the recruiting calendar to do a extensive search. That led to a panic hire of Dooley, which put the downward spiral into high speed.

Oh gawd, I hadn’t thought about rag arm for a good long while.

Ricky was a major locker room cancer.

2001 LSU SECCG is the clear consensus. Huge choke job by Fulmer and Chavis in that game that they never recovered from.

They made it back in 07 just to lose to another LSU backup QB

Keep this in mind, if Tn Held on to Frank Wilson that 2010 and 2011 class that included Tyrann Matthieu, Jarvis Landry, Freak Johnson, Ronald Martin, La el Collins, ect could have signed with TN. Freak was already committed, but Landry was close to pulling the trigger.

Or Fulmer doesn’t fire Clawson and Clawson brings in Tahj Boyd and Bryce Petty.

Clawson then becomes the head coach in waiting as intended.

Infertile recruiting ground in Tennessee and college football popularity on TV has killed Tennessee just like it has killed Nebraska. It use to be come to Tennessee and you can be on TV but now every game is on tv so that hurt their recruiting just like Nebraska.

Butch was a much more likeable guy from what I understand, but I never really got the dirt on him as I haven't spoken to that source since Butch was fired. However, his recruiting class rankings were always BS and not as good as advertised. And their schedules lead to a bunch of bs hype as well.

Butch melted under the Klieg lights. If the Butch Jones that arrived at Tennessee and coached the first 2 teams (which weren't actually his most successful ones) had stuck around he'd still be coaching here but he absolutely couldn't handle the pressure once things became real. He was a guy wanting us to praise him for moral victories and 7-8 wins and while we said 'good job' we also said 'next year needs to be better given the team you've got.' He became paranoid and petty (starting a war with the media) the moment he was faced with expectations.

Butch was better with his coaching peers and other staff than Dooley but was worse when it came to how he treated players. He played favorites and bullied the ones he didn't like.

Also, you don't beat Florida and UGA and then turn around and lose to both Vandy and South Carolina and expect to keep a job. That's a scenario that only happens when you have a talented team that loses faith in their coach and/or just bad coaching.

Steve Pederson fundamentally changing Nebraska’s football identity by moving away from the option killed their program.

What broke Tennessee

Losing unfettered access to key recruiting areas (Atlanta) was a huge, huge part of it. It is difficult for Tennessee to be good at the same time that Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson are recruiting the way they are.

Also, losing Cutcliffe really seemed to hurt them.

That's a hell of a punt return. Unfortunately it left me with uneasy memories of the beast mode run.
