Byrne is toast, and I'm happy about that.

Why are they getting rid of Bryne?

There's several reasons to get rid of Bill Byrne.

1. As previously mentioned, he pays top dollar for non-revenue sports and often goes to the bargain bin for the revenue sports...all while raising ticket prices to ridiculous levels (A&M ticket face value is higher than that of USC or Florida).

2. Byrne single-handedly ruined the gameday atmosphere at Kyle Field. EVERYTHING is scripted now and it doesn't allow the yell leaders or the Aggie Band to capitalize on momentum during the game and keep the crowd energized.

3. Caustic and arrogant attitude towards those who don't agree with him (I'm better than you).

4. As previously stated, not on board with the SEC. The decision to fire Sherman came from above him.

CGSC--Sounds like he'd be a perfect fit to replace DeLoss Dodds.

He gets a $75,000 bonus for each championship, regardless of that sports ability to produce revenue for the athletic program as a whole.

He was never on board with the SEC move as mentioned. The A&M brass basically told him to get with the program or get the hell out. He chose not to do that and has since been treated like a mushroom: fed shite and kept in the dark. He hasn't been involved in any major decisions in quite a while.

I guess to look on the bright side we fricking horse champions.

Whoever agreed to that deal should be fired. It's one thing to get a bonus for a non-revenue sport national title (otherwise there's no incentive to improve them, thus leading to potential Title IX discrimination lawsuits) but clearly the bonus payout should be sliding scale with football and men's basketball the largest.

So who made the call to dump Sherman? Dr. Loftin?

Donors, who Loftin happened to agree with. Money did the talking in the firing though.

It's said "money talks, b.s. walks". And with many of the newer alumni (1970's forward) getting into the prime of their earning (and giving) capacity, and being tired of A&M being a football also-ran among the large universities, it makes sense. Especially with all the talk about a new or significantly renovated Kyle Field.

You can't blame Byrne for all of A&M's football ills.

Fran was not his hire nor did he have control over his fate until the newsletter thing gave him enough ammo to power past the big money Ags who brought him in.

Sherman may have ended up disappointing short term but he had a hell of a hole to dig the program out of and always represented the school with class and dignity. Sumlin is far better off following Sherm than Sherm was following Fran.
