I never said I get drunk. I said I enjoy a drink or two or three. Certainly don't get falling down drunk where people have to help me walk likr this guy:

What now? Anyway...

He's no longer with Tide Pride. He moved out of his house in 2006 and now lives in assisted living due to Alzheimer's.

I know this because I almost bought his house back when it was on the market.

My dear God, please leave this 27 year dead old bag of bones alone.

The Bear did cheat. So what. He was better than anyone in the SEC at doing it. Bama fans have their history, let them relive it when they need to.

I'd like to know how much of that is true, or better stated: What was he accused of specifically?

I think this thread has pretty well established that there is not much more than a lot of smoke (coming from other fanbases) and not a lot of fire to the cheating talk...

Paul Bryant was something of a Dichotomy. He was one part "Mama's Boy"... wannbe preacher... DID give the shirt off his back to someone who needed it more than once... and honestly cared about the boys that played for him... especially the "tweeners".

On the other hand, he did drink to excess, appreciated a well-turned leg, and hung out in places he shouldn't have. Thank God he was a living Legend and the local State Troopers always made sure he got home ok.

He was a better coach than almost anyone of his time... and he defied racism. He brought the first black players into the SEC.

When it's all said and done.... he did well. I'm proud to be an "old" Alabama fan. Paul Bryant damned sure never embarrassed ME.

No,he didn't. Now the famous 1970 Southern Cal game may have made it more accepting, but Kentucky had the first football player, and Vandy had the first basketball player. Tennessee had some key players that were black in '68 and '69.

Honk -- you drink dewars with you hot wings for god sake. You also beat up on Sally every now and then when you drank that tequila. But it's okay in your mind becuase it hurts you more than it does here. And, let's not forget you little problem with that smokeywhite devil.

Well said.

The fact that he brought in some of the 1st black players to the SEC proved he was a visonary. He had balls to do what he did at a time when the South was in racial unrest.

Plain and simple, the man was a winner. And, when opposing fanbases are jealous of the success of another team, the only thing left to do is point fingers and make unsubstantiated accusations.

I don't think he was a "cheater" per se He knew the rules and took advantage of them. Back then you didn't have a limit on scholarships or the players you could sign, so he would sign kids that might never see the field at Bama, but as long as he had them he didn't have to play against them

excellent post but I didnt know about the sec game that is interesting if true but how would you get away with this?

59,

It was a huge deal when the "almighty" Bear Bryant did it. Know what I mean? Different effect on people. Especially with that idiot George Wallace in office.

Again, a rival fan bringing up Coach Bryant.

quote:

He liked a good drink.

I've heard this is true. A lot of people do.

quote:

coming from old school Tiger fans who were jealous of his success,

This happens quite frequently with the rival fans from teams he use to dominate.

quote:

Every coach back then use to cheat, some where just better than others

Correct, Coach Bryant was the reason many rules were made. But at the time, if it wasn't against the rules, it wasn't cheating. Remember, Coach Saban had a rule named for him, the spring recruiting rule. Until it was made, it wasn't illegal.

quote:

strippers and money

Unless, you were his right hand man CPA, it's all presumption.

quote:

cue flock of gumps freaking out

Not freaking. Coach Bryant is unable to defend himself, so some Alabama fans try to keep the record straight. Some people do try to change history.

quote:

I just wanted to pop in and say that Bear is dead and has been for quite some time. All you rival fans need to stop living in the past.

Correcto mundo. Rival fans tend to bring him up more than Bama fans.

quote:

Please share this sentiment with your peers.

Says the person who started this thread.

quote:

He was caught for some irregularities at Texas A&M--and so was Woody Hayes at Ohio State two years later. Any accustations during his tenure at Alabama are lame and reek of jealousy.

quote:

Read the book Junction Boys about his time at Texas A&M, You will see that there were some questionable things that he did in the recruiting of players. But its like everyone said all the coaches were doing it

Thanks, for intelligent replies. Coach Bryant was a good coach, a hall of fame coach, and won several NC for Alabama. Of course, Alabama fans love him even though he was human and had his faults.

But right now I believe the majority of Bama fans thoughts are on our present team and the possibility of a bright future. Coach Saban is the man at Alabama right now.
