No, their continued hiring of the wrong head coach are the collected dumbest coaching decision.

Those wrong head coaches were winners at every other job, until they got to Auburn

But not at Auburn. So not the right coaching hire.

Gus was a one trick pony. Once everyone adapted to tempo he had nothing. He wasn’t successful anywhere else. Auburn was right to fire him, they just made poor hiring decisions after that.

It wasn't the tempo, other teams played tempo. It was the fact that Gus took advantage of the rules of the game at the time, he was the only coach pulling micky mouse shite like designed sub offs where a WR would run a 50 yard route on their side, walk off the field to sub out and a new WR walk on at the scrimmage and run another play.. causing the CB to run all the way back... you do that a couple times and all of a sudden your WR seem to be wide open by 10 yards.

That is what made him so succesful in highschool and college.. it wasn't that the teams did know it was happening, they just couldn't do anything about it. The constnatly complained about it.

It wasn't until the rule change that said if you sub a player you have to let the defensive sub that his balls got cut off.. it made him an odinary coach.

Auburn understood this and got rid of him rightlly so, their hires after him have gone poorly though.
