You're sounding like a barner with these select time periods to make an argument.

I will go to my grave wondering about the follow up season to the '07 BCS Championship for LSU. It defied logic.

Yeah, it was clearly an aberration, but Bama fans were shouting from the rooftops that the order of things had returned in the SEC and that LSU was falling apart.

Clearly not the case, which begs the question that I pose here.

Well, Alabama didn't have a great deal of success in the 8 years or so before this time period. It makes sense for the purposes of highlighting that success.

Maybe so. Just thinking about where things stand presently with the programs and what the next 4-6 years might look like.

Bama has a great program. I'm not denying it and it will be a tough game every year.

Just couldn't help but notice that the only 2 times that Bama has won in the past 8 contests were when LSU had their 2 worst teams and Bama had their 2 best teams and the games were close. That says something, I think.

Considering the history of the series, in a thread of this nature, which makes more sense; Alabama being down allowed LSU to capitalize, or LSU being down allowed Alabama to capitalize?

With Bama fans, obviously. This is the same kind of logic that Bama fans use all the time and it seems to apply the other way as well.

It also says something that during Alabama's two worst stretches, the late 50s and early 2000s, LSU has its most success (1958, 2003, and 2007).

Speaking of inferiority complex list, this thread tests my theory from this morning.

Lets just be honest with ourselves here. The obvious answer is Alabama.

Just go start a thread questioning Alabama. Seriously, about any old topic. I dare you to just to see what happens.

If you look at the last decade, clearly the latter.

LSU returned to form last year and beat Alabama, the preseason #1 and defending national champion returning almost all their offense and still finishing with the #1 defense in the SEC.

Also, LSU had somethink like the #82 offense in the country and still went 11-2 and beat Alabama.

So, yeah, the latter.

The 70's
I know no Bama fans will admit it, but the SEC West was way, way down those two years compared to now and they had a rather easy path.

Auburn was down during that timeframe, too.. Arky was working it's way up. Hell, Ole Miss went 9-4 two consecutive seasons. I can see what you're saying. That could have had a lot to do with it.

What was Auburn's record against bama in the eight year stretch?

Never again
But seriously, answer to the question. NO

Overall, 2008 was one of the worst years for the conference in recent memory (particularly in the Western Division).

I won't disagree with that. The landscape of college football has always been down when there's one conference monopolizing all the talent and dominating college football. CFB was mediocre in '06, '07, '09 and '10 when the SEC was absolutely dominant and at its peak of its powers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the SEC was down in the years when CFB had a ton of quality teams at the top ('04, '08).

Okay. I'll give you that. I do not deny Bama's past success.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 4 years or so with both programs firing on all cylinders.

Has that ever happened before over a long period?

History says that when one is up, the other is down somewhat. But now, they are both up. If LSU wins in Tuscaloosa, that will be telling as to the relative strength of the programs, I think.
