SEC umps are shite in baseball just like SEC refs for basketball.

LSU gave up 6 walks on the first 7 hitters on Sunday. That was a rough way to start out.

1) they are grading the umpires more strictly, so strike zones are smaller
2) ball/bat combo is much more offense friendly this year (look at the increase in HRs year over year). pitchers are more worried about making mistakes that get crushed, so they’re nibbling more

Offense is up so pitchers are trying to nibble more.

You’re giving pitchers too much credit, at least our Ps. They just can’t find the zone consistently when the ump doesn’t expand it for them.

If you don't want to swing you often don't have to.

This and the strike zone shrunk

The strike zone stinks this year. Outside of a few pitchers, the league is also not as stacked with front end pitching talent as years past.

Maybe the pitch clock plays a bit of a role as well. Seems like pitchers could just mosey around and take their time before, but now they have to rush a bit and also worry about base runners getting a better jump now.
They’ll adjust I’d imagine.

ive noticed this several times. the better pitches get the benefit of doubt. but it seems the reputation of pitchers that are a little wild has gotten into the umps head as well.

I've never seen it this bad at LSU. Seems like we have the worst pitching staff in the SEC, but I know that's not the case.

yep - our radio crew has said many times that Trackman now being in all SEC ballparks has caused Blue to squeeze pitchers far more this season. umpires are reviewed after each game against what Trackman would've called balls/strikes.

our crew also said that it apparently hasn't stopped the tradition of SEC umpires randomly missing a ball/strike call on any given pitch though - confusing everyone in the stadium

Not for us we just prefer to hit the batter, saves on the pitch count.....yes, we suck..

Simple reason.
The umps are being graded on their balls and strikes calls with Trackman.
No more corner strikes 8-10 inches off the plate being called.

The ump's strike zone's are tighter than a crabs arse
