I am convinced it is psychological. Every time they play a team worth a shite, they get smeared. Despite having the talent available to keep a game against a good team within one or two scores, they end up quitting in the second or third quarter.

2018 Kentucky was the last good team Tennessee beat (don't @ me, Kentucky went 10-3 that year). I believe they won that game because it's a "helmet game," and the players knew a victory against Kentucky was always within reach.

Conversely, every time Tennessee faces its Big 3 rivals- Florida, Georgia, Alabama- they are obliterated. They are so used to losing those games that they come out there without the will to win them. Sure, Alabama may be a different animal (Florida and Georgia get stomped on by them when they occasionally meet), but even a downtrodden Ole Miss program can compete with them. Similarly, Auburn can compete with them, despite not being as good recently, why? Because they have the will to win that game.

Tennessee has 35 consecutive losses against the AP Top 10, and they have all but surrendered against competition. VOLS are simply incapable of upsets, and that is entirely on the coaching staff for not mentally preparing their players for the big stage.

There’s definitely something to that I think. That’s on the head coach squarely, if that’s the case. Pruitt can’t blame Butch for that.

You are overestimating the talent on Tennessee’s roster

They fell apart as soon as our link behind the center self-destructed.

Tennessee is pretty shitty but the OP has a valid point. The 31 point margin of victory Florida had over Tennessee was their fourth most lopsided victory of the season after Vandy, UT-Martin, and Towson. Even that trainwreck of a Florida State team was more competitive with Florida than Tennessee was. Georgia beat Tennessee by 29 points last year. That was also their fourth largest win after Murray State, Arkansas State, and 3-9 Georgia Tech. Jake Fromm was 24-29 against them. Against the rest of SEC competition last year, his completion percentage was barely over 50%. I don't think it's unreasonable for Tennessee fans to expect their team to keep it within 17 points of UGA and Florida instead of getting obliterated by 25+ points every single time.

Especially Florida, which is much closer to Tennessee talent-wise, if the VOLS can't play UF close in Neyland, Proot may not survive

We have a bad philosophy going into it. Were always a move behind what's happening. We hired a defensive guy as our head coach in a time noone can play very good defense. I think pruitt would have been a good hire in 2010. Im not writing him off yet but he needs to get woth the times and evolve like saban and O have. Running the ball and relying on your defense isn't a working plan anymore. Uga is probably a top 5 defense and was last year as well and they got torched by lsu and bama. They just have the horses to hang in there. Most teams dont

Tennessee was the only SEC defense to give up 30+ to UGA that year.

This. We haven't had an offense since Dobbs left. That's when the blowouts started.

Had the Vols quick kicked on their 1st three series after the half that game might have looked a lot different. Instead JG played like well JG and killed his team.

Defense isn't causing these games to be blowouts. A lack of offense is. We had a decent defense the last two seasons and it hasn't changed those numbers at all. The constant is JG and this offense. Since Butch's last year (no Dobbs), we have had no offense.
