Senior safety Byron Moore is so confident that Tennessee fans will break the school’s record for spring game attendance on Saturday, he’s threatened to leave Twitter forever if the crowd falls short.

It’s an ambitious goal. The Vols drew 73,801 fans in 1986. The next closest crowd was 51,488 for Lane Kiffin’s first spring in 2010. A year later, the Vols drew 35,891 fans for Derek Dooley’s first season.
Spring game attendance — meaningless as it might seem — is increasingly drawing attention as a way to gauge a program’s “momentum” and as a visible sign of the fan base’s enthusiasm. Kentucky, which reportedly drew more than 50,000 fans to its spring game earlier this month, is a prime example.
Apparently Kentucky has rustled the Vols' jimmies.

ETA: In all seriousness, do any Vols fans know how Johnny Majors managed to get 73k out for a spring game in '86?
1986 turned out to be an epic season. #8 ranked Vols lost to State at home in September. The loss to State dropped the Vols completely out of the polls for the rest of 1986. They went on to lose to unranked Army at home in October. Finished the season with a big win in the Liberty Bowl.

Their whole team other than the o-line sucks. They made a very underwhelming hire. They ain't breaking no record.
And as for the Moore kid, he's slow as shite.

Were they really keeping spring game attendance numbers in 1986?

If they were selling tix, I bet there would be a solid count.

Tennessee can barely get 80% full for a real game.

The Vols just came off of a season where they finished ranked #4 and clown stomped Miami in the Sugar bowl.
Much easier to get 73K at a Spring game after you finish #4 in the country than if you just finished #7 in your division.
