Starting this thread for anyone like myself needing info from locals on NOLA etc.

I am staying on St.Charles in the Garden District. What is the best way to get into town and the quarter? I measured about 1.5 miles to the quarter from where I am staying. Is the Garden District safe?

Thanks.

The street car runs right down St. Charles through the Garden District. No idea how late it runs, but when I was last there, it did run at night. It will take you up to Canal Street, and the French Quarter.

We're talking about New Orleans, right? No place in NO is "very" safe.

I think the better question is when do the street cars schedule end? The game is 7:30 PM. Should last 4 hours. I honestly don't know the answer.

should run to about 1 am check with your hotel to be sure. You will be fine the whole time as long as you stay with group and follow the crowds. It is acyually much safer since Katina. The cops will be out full blast for the game and everywhere. Great dining reservations now. Go to WWL online and get the picks from the guy there. You cant go wrong with Nr B's Brennans steakhouse, Palace Cafe, Stella's, Acme etc. Just get reservations now as it will be a zoo. Eat about 3 hours before game.

I would think the street car would be running pretty late that night, but it may be tough to find a spot. Getting down there via streetcar will be easy that day.
As far as getting back, I'd walk toward the River from the dome and look for a cab back to the garden district. Lot's of places in the Warehouse Dist. (to the right as you walk down poydras toward the river)to get a drink or something to eat if the cabs are hard to get. Warehouse Dist, around the Dome, and the route back to your hotel is safe....don't listen to these idiots.

street car or cab. If you have to walk back try to do it with a group. Oh, and I recommend United Cab only.

Take the streetcar to the Riverbend. Go on a beer / food binge at Cooter Brown's and Camellia Grill.

It's safe. I used to live near the Garden District on Napoleon Ave, 6 blocks from St. Charles.

I don't know what the streetcar costs these days but bring some extra change with you... probably costs around 1.50 or 3.00 to ride now. Ride it down to Canal then walk from there. The French Quarter is across Canal St. IIRC, Carondelet St. (where the streetcar drops you off at Canal) turns into Burbon St. across Canal.

Btw, take the streetcar the other direction to Carrollton and St. Charles. Cooter Brown's is half block from there on Carrollton at the river. They've got a great Muffeletta. Lots of great beer, TVs, etc. Fun place.

He is not being an idiot here. N.O. is the murder capitol of the U.S. Be very careful. They don't care what color you wear. Even in the french quarter. Travel in groups at night and stay on well traveled streets.
