Hands down, best small college town in country
Oxford, particularly in the old days.. reminded me of Norman Rockwell concept of a college town and campus.
I'm surprised so many people have a hard time admitting that it is a rather idyllic spot in the south. That being said, I've been to every campus and town in the SEC except Kentucky and Vandy... and they have all had some nice things about them.
I even enjoyed the toned down "any town" vibe of Starkville... especially compared to Oxford.... which tends to be a bit pretentious.

Snack Bar is the best restaurant overall.
Snackbar is fantastic, but SoLa gives it a run for its money. The chef at Snackbar is leaving, so it's gonna be interesting to see who Currence brings in.

I'm a State grad. I love Oxford. My youngest will probably go to Ole Miss. I could see myself retiring there.
Oxford > Starkville by a mile and Starkville is not as bad as people make it out to be. Both can be true.
Starkville is paying for its mistakes of hating MSU for 100 years. Its not quite as bad now, but until the early 2000s, the city seemed to do everything it could to spite MSU.

I can tell you haven't been following education trends. Mississippi, once guaranteed to be 49th or 50th in education, is now 16th.
What has happened in this state in the last decade is a miracle.

It's changed so much. Back in the '80's, there wasn't much there except for the school. You could rent a house near the square for a pittance if you were a student. Stores like Neilson's and Square Books were there, but the higher end eateries came later. There was a great haberdashery that sold Southwick suits and traditional men's clothing.
It's phenomenally expensive today. All of the prime real estate around the square has been gobbled up, and you'll pay handsomely to live there.

Before then, me and my dad would throw our Ole Miss window flags on the windows and go right through the fricking middle of starkville.
If you would have drove past the engraving place.. they would have caught up to you at a traffic light and presented you with a plaque to memorialize the attention you were desperately craving.

Crying like this is precisely why we did it.

Who’s crying?
Just saying that only simps who have to beg for attention and poors would actually stop a vehicle mid trip and put on flags just to drive through a town and attempt to get attention.
