It's not the stretch play that's the issue. Hardy has a habit of trying to stutter step and slide instead of hitting the hole and getting what you can. Roberts hits the hole hard.

You have to give the qb a chance to throw. The worst that could happen is an incompletion or INT, which is the same outcome as a punt.
