Very solid defenses here at Vandy while he was here. His schemes are a little complex and maybe UT players had a little trouble picking up what he was trying to do which may have limited his ability to do what he really wanted defensively.

I honestly can't wrap my head around him sucking at UT given his success elsewhere.
Was he really that successful though? Penn State got better after he left.

Would not judge him based on his time at UT. You can't win there.

Was considered a great DC then went to Knoxville and turned into a phaggot.

Is top 10 "that successful"?

Worst coordinator in the history of VOLS. If he struggles to relay his concepts to his defense at Tennessee, I can’t picture him having success trying to teach near illiterate Mississippi boys

He had to deal with a ridiculous amount of injuries here both years and Butch.
He also ran nickel against LSU in a rain storm. The best players didn’t always play. Get use to having your dbs line up 10 yards off. He loved to give the other team the edge for some reason, I think he got off on it. It’s like he try to make his defense soft as possible just for the hell of it. Didn’t show that he had any idea on how to stop the run. Statistically the worst DC in Tennessee history.
Now watch him look great at State.

Rush defense isn't important in the SEC West...right? If so, you'll be fine.
By the numbers for UT's rush defense in 2017:
Rank - 125th
Opponent Rushing yards per carry - 5.43
Opponent Rushing yards per game - 251.3
Opponent Rushing Tds - 29
At least the endzone kept opponents from higher rushing yards per game...so I guess that was his guiding defensive philosophy.
2017 College Football Rushing Defense Rankings
They were also 93rd in tackles for loss at 5.1 per game.
2017 College Football Tackles for Loss Rankings
Pass defense was much better.
Ranking 84th in total sacks at 1.83 per game
2017 College Football Total Defensive Sacks
And ranking 60th in Team Passing Defense (but remember...opponents could run at will). Opponents threw the ball less than 300 times against UT. UT had 5 interceptions and allowed just under 180 passing yards per game.
2017 Passing Efficiency Defensive Rankings
In a nutshell, it was bad.
ETA...but much of that was because the offense couldn't get them off of the field and they were starting walk-on linebackers and DL by the end of the season.

Shoop? Proabably just don't know the difference between us and Arkansas. We don't get much respect. I'd rather be confused with Arkansas than Ole Miss though.

We liked him even though his defenses sucked because when he spoke to the media he didn't give us Butch coach speak. I think he hated Butch. Sometimes he would say something that completely contradicted Butch.
He was in charge of 2 of the worst defenses in UT history, but the blame falls on Butch

Team Efficiencies - 2017
Team efficiencies are based on the point contributions of each unit to the team's scoring margin, on a per-play basis. The values are adjusted for strength of schedule and down-weighted for "garbage time" (based on win probability). The scale goes from 0 to 100; higher numbers are better and the average is roughly 50 for all categories. Efficiencies update daily during the season.
Off Def.
89 Vanderbilt, SEC 53.9 37.6 34.0 41.1
90 Tennessee, SEC 34.6 47.9 49.1 39.3
91 Miami (OH), MAC 37.2 44.3 52.4 39.0
92 Mid Tennessee, C-USA 33.2 47.7 49.3 38.1
93 UAB, C-USA 37.2 47.3 30.5 36.4
Doesn't look like the defense was the problem. The UT defense was on the field the most, thanks to the worst offense in the SEC

Vol fans making up some pretty hilarious nonsense about Shoop

I like Shoop, I think he is very smart but our defenses were Charmin soft under him.
Maybe that will be different for you guys.

Every poster ITT except for board retard oleyeller is blaming Butch for Shoop's poor performance.
And it WAS a poor performance, there is no arguing against that.

Defense wasn't the problem, but it was A problem.
Yes, UT's offense sucked in 2017...but the defense was only on the field 72.5 plays per game (ranking 69th...or about the middle of the pack). It isn't like they were out there 85 plays per game like Wake Forest. They were on the field 1.3 more plays per game than Auburn...or 1.6 plays per game more than Kentucky.
2017 college football opponent plays per game

Lol he had the two worst defenses in the history of our program, and it was reported on a weekly basis that the defense was struggling with what he was asking of them in practice.

I agree with Oleyeller, Shoop sucks. I wish that wasn’t the case as I am now a State fan.

When you lose 5 defensive tackles your defense is going to suck no matter who is calling the defense. Guy was the hottest DC name in the country before he came to your school’s dumpster fire.
