I know the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport exists because the University began a Civilian Pilot Training Program in the 1930s. It didn’t transition into a regional airport until the 1970s. In large part because Bear Bryant wanted more accessible flights.

Auburn is located in a smaller town.
How does them having a smaller airport equate to them not being a “real” university?

Real universities (other than Auburn, their aviation program is legit) fly out of real airports handled by FAA ATC approach controls such as Gainesville, which is worked by JAX approach.
Easterwood (TAMU) ATC..Houston Center and Houston Approach.
I Flew a 757 in there in 2003. They may not have had Approach Control then.

All those airports have published approaches that are controlled by the FAA. Most do not have active towers that operate full time. Airports like Tuscaloosa have a control tower part of the day and other airports like Auburn bring in a control tower during game day to make the airport a controlled airspace. Before deregulation, they all had some type of commercial service, not the case today.
