Apparently you gotta hand it to the ump to complete the catch

And then the ball is moving in the shortstop’s glove because of the collision but he didn’t leave early so the catch was complete?

LSU fan. It's the only argument he knows if life isn't going his way (and it doesn't go his way a LOT).

As a baseball fan, I simply cannot comprehend how they ruled that not a catch

I’ve seen far worse lost on transfers be ruled a catch, but that’s not the same situation I guess.

“In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall demonstrate complete control of the ball and that the release of the ball is voluntary and intentional.”

A case where it looked like he had the ball forever in slow motion but was a split second at full speed....

Then the coach acted like a jack arse on the tag

Doesn't matter how long you have the ball. Unless its on the transfer it has to be a voluntary release of the ball, which it clearly wasnt. The rule book is pretty clear on this.

It's the old "complete the catch" rule in football, except that if you reach for the ball and it comes out, it is considered a catch.

Wasn't a voluntary release. Not hard.
