MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tubby Smith has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the University of Memphis Tiger men’s basketball team. The decision was made during a meeting with administrators Wednesday. “After considerable deliberations and in the best financial interest of the University of Memphis, an agreement of separation with Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tubby Smith has been reached,” U of M Assistant Athletic Director Tamy DeGroff said in a statement. “Details are to be finalized, and no further comment will be offered.”

Good for Tubby. He deserves better than what he got at Memphis. He's a solid coach. He'll never get you a top 20 signing class but he recruits solid players and builds a team. Good X's and O's guy that preaches fundamentals.

He didn't win enough at Kentucky in the later years to keep the vocal part of the fanbase happy and theres still a lot of closet racist out there who never accepted Tubby in the first place but he was a great coach.

I like Tubby, but he's 66 years old. Is he still really invested in the recruiting and running of a college basketball program?

No clue. He was never big on recruiting even in his youth. His assistants did most of it. I think the hardest recruiting he did was "finding" the Randolf Morris fax.

As it stands Memphis is making a deal with Penny Hardaway, an AAU coach with no college experience. I suspect they'll make a splash in recruiting for a year or two before his connections to current high school players dry up and I have no idea if Penny can even coach.

Penny is the man now. East High had a nice run though.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

UGA should definitely bring in Tubby. I liked him when he was at UK. Good coach. They could do worse.

How can you be racist about basketball of all sports? Almost every player is black.

Yeah I agree, but like he said, Kentucky still has a lot of closet racist apparently. Pretty sad in this day and age.

Good question, but I distinctly remember a lot of outcry about Tubby Smith when he was hired at Kentucky, and it was about the color of his skin.

If they are in the closet - how does one come to that conclusion unless your just accusing people in general like liberals love to do.

He dominates AAU and Tennessee high school basketball, and he played for some pretty good coaches including Larry Brown. I'm thinking he will be more than adequate at X's and O's.

Tubby screwed himself when he fired the Lawson dad as an assistant coach and replaced him with his son Saul. He not only lost the two best players on Memphis's team by doing that, but he also cost them 3 future top 50 recruits with the other two Lawson sons and Lawson's 5 star nephew out of Olive Branch. On the one hand he's taking a stand against employing the father of players/recruits, but then on the other hand he replaces the guy with his own son who recruited a player who had been committed to a D-2 school to replace the Lawsons
