I'll give you two examples in the SEC.
Nolan Richardson coaches his team to be uptempo and applies defensive pressure the full length of the coach. The NCAA themselves engage in a decade long witch hunt as he has to be cheating somehow to have a program that good.
In comes Pitino who coaches the same style of play, but he is said to be a tactician who identify and targets the oppositions weakness by applying full court defensive pressure and forces them to keep up via uptempo play. His character is above reproach, he would never commit violations to sign a recruit.
The media is just as guilty, go watch the talking head in before the 94 NC talk about how smart Duke was and how Arkansas didn't posses the mental aptitude to beat them.
So basically yes, it is possible to be racist and still watch support team sports comprised of mostly black players. The only line to these people is the color of the coaches skin which is why there have been so few black head coaches in the major sports at the major universities in the south.

Saying a fan base has a lot of closeted racist sounds an awful lot like I can’t handle criticism so play the race card. Standard response in today’s age to just blame racism for everything that negatively harms you because it’s an easy excuse.

While you are correct he did not get fired you are incorrect on him going behind UK's back. I was involved with him on. some inner city projects and he always wanted Saul on his staff. If you ever talked to Saul it was clear as well. Some schools like Louisville and Texas Tech are moot on nepotism but some schools like Kentucky and Indiana have a pretty strict policy against it. City of Lexington even has it as part of their laws and the former chief of police could not allow his son or nephew to stay on the force.
