With Georgia's recent addition of JT Daniels, I got to thinking about the massive impact that transfer quarterbacks have had lately. Not only are they coming in and filling a need but often times performing at the highest level. To illustrate, Transfer QBs have accounted for 7 out of the 24 (30%) of the starting quarterbacks on playoff teams and 9 of the 27 (33%) of the quarterbacks who finished in the top 10 in Heisman voting in the playoff era

Are we of consensus that the College Football quarterback free agency is good for college football? It would be a shame to have some of these guys wasting away as backups and depriving the fans of great quarterback play

I dont have a problem with it, coaches are constantly bouncing around.

Fair enough. Guess I should have read better. Neither was in NY for the ceremony.

Yes, QBs not waiting is a good thing

Transfers are going to be constant at that position. Only one guy plays in the usual game unlike every other position.

The elite back up doesn't have patience anymore.

It's definitely becoming a trend. On one hand it's good that these guys aren't wasting away on a bench somewhere, but nobody seems to be willing to stick around and wait their turn anymore.

I started with finalists but it was a somewhat small sample size. Also some years had only 1 QB finalist and I felt that that didn’t represent the season very well

Don't worry, Lawrence is back this year. And Brennan coming off the bench will set the world on fire. People will start to realize that its more about the program you go to in the beginning. Maybe then Georgia will stop getting these 5 star QBs that either transfer out or start and throw the ball 21-22 times a game.

Informative post. Nice work.

At this point in the young history of the portal, it seems to benefit qb’s the most. I read an article recently regarding players at other positions wasting away in the portal and oftentimes not being able to find a new home. It’s certainly not a cure all for everyone.

The limited data suggests it’s been helping qb’s the most. Prominent exception being Martel and I’m sure some others I’m unaware of.

From a player perspective, I think it’s most useful for qb’s and maybe not the best move for other positions. I know I’m lacking sources, but google can solve that.

Because prior to last year LSU was known for their passing attack?

Kyle Allen transferred to Houston only to be 3rd string and then declare for the NFL draft when he wasn't going to start over D'Erik King.

Nick Starkel...is just terrible

I remember when certain fanbases argued a player needs to be loyal and not leave when they lose a starting spot.

JT Daniels will be a giant fail! Mark it!

Jamie Newton will be less than expected!

Mark it!

Intelligent Coaches get a transfer with 2 years to play not 1 like Kirby

That’s a Standard that’s just plain common sense, unless your QB situation is just broken and out of desperation you grab a QB.

Other positions you can get away with a 1-year-to-play transfer.

2017 playoff QBs were such garbage. Mayfield and the sooners totally blew their best shot at a title that year. They don’t call them chokelahoma for nothin I guess. I feel like OU would have beaten that bama team.

No, and that is one of our top reasons for never getting 5* QB recruits.

Their defense was still hot garbage. Alabama probably scores 50+ on them. The only difference is it with 400 yards rushing or passing

Jalen hurts was not that good on that team. Mayfield was rolling. It would’ve happened.

Starkel struck me as having tremendous talent. The ability to make every throw and so on.

Which didn't matter because he was a complete head case. The first time something went wrong he would go to pieces. Not only for that game but the ones after it as well.
