My guess is they still would have made OK #1 over us for beating #1 Penn State in their bowl game.

That game was bad news for your Gamecocks for sure. I remember reading about it in the papers. That was a year when it seemed nobody could stay undefeated except BYU who beat a below average Michigan team in a meaningless bowl game to win the MNC.
