We aren't a "real city", and that makes some of the growth here harder for old timers. We're a metro growing out of the middle of nowhere, based entirely on home-grown companies and a university, so that's kind of unique itself.

500k+ people is a pretty robust region, I had no idea that area had that many people now.

It still doesn't feel like it most days. The metro is bi-polar, with most of the cultural activities concentrated in Fayettevile on the south end or Bentonville on the north end. AA baseball is in Springdale. The best retail is in Rogers. Every "big town" has something to offer.

More or less, we feel like the "nice suburbs" of a big city, without the big city, and one of those towns is a big liberal college town.

Sprawl isn't terrible here. The metro is linear, so you aren't far from the country-side no matter what city you are in. Lots of attention has been paid to preserving parks and greenspace, and each city is really focused on making its downtown nice. It's like one long city, with each downtown being a "cool neighborhood" of its own. Springdale has the furthest to go in that regard, but even their downtown is getting pretty cool.

Sounds like an up and coming area for sure. I hope I can get out that way next month. The geography out there is awesome too. Aren't they connecting 49 all the way to KC?

Are people Chiefs and Royals fans there?

As Tennessee Williams said, "there are only three unique American cities: New York, San Francisco and New Orleans. The rest are all Cleveland."
The answer is New Orleans.

Once again, the mid-size cities and metros in the south are very cool.

Chattanooga
Huntsville
Fayetteville
Savannah
Charleston
Ashville

And more are really cool areas. Living in a city like ATL is a complete grind. Lots of good but much more bad aspects.

Oh for sure. As far as uniqueness and culture/people are concerned, new orleans is second to none. It honestly feels like you're in a different country when you're strolling around the French quarter. Awesome city.

Ha! Try convincing tourist of that. NOLA is the new armpit of the south with the 4th highest murder rate in the nation.

Proof? The film industry has been in a little place called Wilmington, NC for many years before it was in Georgia.

Are you really trying to say that Wilmington, NC has a better movie industry than Atlanta, GA?!?!
quote:
Really? How many major sporting events are in Nashville as opposed to Atlanta? Want to go down the list?

Do I really need to list these for you? For a city that is 1/5 the metro size they have hosted many NCAA basketball tournaments, have an NHL team and an arena that is far superior to Phillips in construction and location.

Yes, you do need to go down the list. Has Nashville been chosen to host the Olympics, a Super Bowl, the SECCG?

Care to compare how many corporate national or regional HQ's are in Atlanta compared to any other SE town? It ain't close.

No, I don't. We all know there are more, which has no relevance on how "nice" one perceives a city. Dallas and Houston both have more, are they nicer? No

The title of the thread is "Best City". Do a national poll of what city people think is the best city in the SE and see how many votes Nashville gets over Atlanta.

quote:
This shows how little you know about Atlanta. And that's pretty typical of most who've never spent any time here. Atlanta has more airports than any city in the SE, plus the busiest. Want to compare the number of airports Atlanta has to the rest of the SE? With the completion of the Mercedes-Benz stadium, Atlanta will arguably have some of the best sporting venues in the nation, much less the SE. Atlanta has some of the best restaurants in the SE, best museums, best tourism venues, best hiking, biking, green spaces, universities, etc. Name me one city in the SE that has more of all of the afore-mentioned than Atlanta and we'll compare item-by-item.

I lived in Atlanta for a decade. Atlanta has no second major commercial Airport. Smaller aiports like DeKalb Peachtree are not relative when it comes to large commercial operations like a Delta or United. Chicago has Midway, Houston has Hobby, DC has Dulles and Reagan, etc. This is widely known information.

None of the cities you mentioned are in the SE. Hartsfield-Jackson is also larger than most of the airports that you mentioned, with little need to build another at the present. However, you failed to mention all of the other regional airports like McCollum, Charlie Brown, etc. How many does Nashville, Charlotte, Miami, New Orleans, etc. have?

I'm not arguing any of this, I don't know why you think I am. I'm actually moving back, I love Atlanta. I just live in reality about the place. The area doesn't even have a regional public transportation system. Who cares about the football stadium? Cities build stadiums all the time, like I'm going to choose a city to live in or call the best because of a fricking football stadium, good grief.

Wait, what is MARTA? Is it not a regional transportation system? What is CCT? You must have been gone a very long time! Atlanta is a great city and a great place to live. The title of this thread is "Best city in the southeast/SEC" and I think a national poll would put Atlanta at the top of that list. I'm pretty sure of it.

No, Marta isn't a regional transportation system, it is only funded by three counties.

I'm just going to agree once again with this and leave it at that.

I'm not going to keep repeating myself. Cheers.

The local AA affiliate is KC Royals, ( NWA Naturals) and there have always been Chiefs and Royals fans here due to proximity. Fayetteville cable carries the weekly "65 Toss Power Trap Productions" Kansas City Chiefs fan show.

Arkansas is still majority STL Cardinal and Dallas Cowboys fans. This is the only area of the state where that gets blurred. And honestly, with all of the transplants, there are fans of every team imaginable here, just like any other growing metro.

I-49 to KC is in the near future, yes. It's pretty much freeway the entire way already.

Atlanta is the only world-class city in the Southeast. Miami could be considered one, but it pales in comparison to Atlanta in terms of importance. It is more of a Caribbean city anyway.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned in this thread, but Birmingham is going through a great rebirth. Downtown is being reborn, and is coming on as an up-and-coming food scene. Zagat's called it America's next hot food city, and Food and Wine (?) magazine just moved their operations from New York to Bham. Check out The NY Times article recently about visiting Bham. Good stuff for the foodies

Not to mention it's so conveniently located to most of the southeast.

It will never be a Nashville or Atlanta (and it doesn't need to be) but it rivals other mid sized cities (Savannah, Charleston, Chattanooga, etc)

Atlanta is a big city with a strong economy.
There is nothing particularly distinctive, unique, historical or interesting about it.

I disagree. While I think Atlanta is the obvious capital of the South and certainly world class, Miami is the de facto capital of Latin America and therefore very much a "global" city.

The AT Kearney Global Cities Index ranks the cities of the world based on various criteria, which basically come together to rank a city's global importance. Obviously New York and London battle it out each year for the overall #1 ranking. Here are how the US Cities rank with their world ranking in parentheses:

1. New York (1)
2. Chicago (7)
3. Los Angeles (8)
4. Washington (10)
5. Boston (21)
6. San Francisco (23)
7. Miami (30)
8. Atlanta (38)
9. Houston (40)
10. Dallas (48)
11. Philadelphia (50)
12. Phoenix (72)

It's worth noting that these were the only 12 American cities considered in their rankings of 128 world cities. While the Top 11 would likely all stay in that order, I believe a handful of cities such as Seattle and maybe Denver would come in ahead of Phoenix had they been considered.

But this just shows that Miami is on par with Atlanta in a global sense. They are polar opposites, and important for different reasons. Atlanta is the capital of the South. Miami is not at all Southern despite its geography.
