Recovering fumbles is most certainly luck. You dont control how a ball bounces.
Losing a lot of starters but not being overly talented is usually not a recipe for improving an average defense into an elite one.
With that said, if you played Michigan all year long, I would understand the confidence more.

We'll be fine ... but thanks for your concern.
I understand your Freudian need to believe that SC's defense will be inadequate this coming season. I am fairly confident that you're going to be sorely disappointed however.
SC's defense will actually show quite a bit of improvement this coming season. You'll find out soon enough, 2nd week of September in The Cock Pit.
FWIW, and knowing full well that it matters not in terms of trying to convince you of anything, but every player we lost to graduation this past season ... each and every one of them are being replaced with a bigger, faster, higher rated player.
And, another fwiw, but last year's entire team was comprised of 70% Freshmen and Sophomores ... meaning SC will be fielding a much more experienced, more physically developed, team this year. Not to mention this past signing class enrolled 13 players in January who were able to come in and compete in this Spring. Additionally, we brought in a couple of JuCo and graduate transfers that will contribute immediately at key positions.

Not being top 3 isnt necessarily a sign of inadequacy. In fact, it could be very good still.

My bad. I stand corrected. I only looked at SEC regular season games.
Let me rephrase. LSU was the ONLY SEC "D" to hold bama UNDER 184 yards rushing. It was 116 with a 3.2 ypc avg to be exact.
Looking forward to our game in death valley. We really don't play often enough. One of my most memorable games in tiger stadium was our game in '03.

Maybe. I try to be fair. I mentioned that our adjustments played a big role. I just think it is silly not to acknowledge Kerryon was hurt. I think we would have still won if Kerryon had not been hurt, but it would have been closer.
I also believe that the first game was an anomaly.

I was born in Baton Rouge, and went back to live as an adult for several years. I still have family there, and my brother is still a rabid LSU fan, so I am always looking forward to playing LSU. I'm with you. We don't play often enough.

I know he was hurt, but Even A healthy rb still needs room to run, and we didn’t provide that. We saw their healthy WRs get shut down as well for the same reason. His impact was also exaggerated in game 1.

Okay. I agree. That's why I said our adjustments played a major role. I still think it would have been a closer game. if you disagree, that's fine. I have no problem with your opinion, and acknowledge that you very well could be right that it would have had no impact on the game.
It all boils down to opinion, though, ultimately.

Blah blah blah.
If a you lose a senior class, it often means that you return about 70% of your players. Meaning all of those players will be more experienced.
And you signed early enrollees? Shocker. Everyone else did too.
Congrats on being like every other team. I'm sure it will work out great for you. It always does.

Keep trying to tell you, AUs OL was poor last year. They had talent and will have talent this year, but Hand was a terrible OL Coach. AU could run the ball outside and off the Guards at times, but KJ got most of his yards on his own. Once KJ became a non-factor, UGA could protect the outside and stop AU. The OL pass protection all year was poor (see Clemson Game) and once it became obvious that Stidham had to win it alone, UGA went after him.

With the new talent on the DL and LB, the LSU front seven will be down right scary this year.

Oh looky here.... a list of names PROVING LSU is going to have an amazing defense. Why everyone knows that Boudreaux, Thibidoux, Alfonso, Larry, Moe, and Curly, backed up by Huey, Dewey, and Lewey, are going to be unstoppable. Uhhhh ... who?
Of course exactly one front 7 player from LSU was picked on the preseason all/SEC teams, but what do those idiots know ... they all hate LSU. Of course the players that couldn’t start last year will all be better this year than the players they couldn’t beat out last year, who got pushed around last year. And just look at all those names of LBs...most of whom were recruited as DEs, none (except White) of whom have proven to be first class SEC quality yet, much less the 6-7 quality LBs you need to run a season/game long 3-4.
But what is particularly laughable is the way the wittle tiggers react to a simple caution. Just saying “whoa” is akin to blasphemy about something that as been repeated so often on Tr that it MUST be true. Uhhh... no one has said anyone was bad...I said they were unlikely to be as good as Ala, Aub, State, and Ga. and they are unproven...and the college football commentators are not particularly impressed, and there is a reason prognosticators are calling LSU at 7-5 or so. It is hard for me to envision a top three defense on a 7-5 team...but perhaps I lack imagination.
But just go ahead and get your bung hole all red and sore...and pretend no one was saying 8-first round draft picks, etc. last year. Maybe I’ll be surprised at how good the LSU defense will be this year. Right now I’m looking at game tapes of the D in the State and Troy games, especially the play of the front seven. Perhaps I’ll have an epiphany.

Gonna save this post for no other reason than how dumb it makes this tard look at the end of the year.

The outside was protected from the start of game 2 and the holes inside magically shrunk to where even a healthy Kerryone had no room to gash us. That’s no coincidence. That’s adjustment.

Yes, I realize that. But you lost 4 of the 5 starters on the OLine from the SECCG. That does not bode well.

Here is where we disagree strongly. We stopped the outside before Kerryon showed he was hurt.

It was spotty at best. Seemed to do well at times, and then look horrid at times. But, yes. We started going after Stidham in the second half of the game.
I don't know if Kerryon being healthy would have made a game changing difference or not. maybe. maybe not. but we came out with a completely different offensive and defensive philosophy in the second game.
Maybe you have not rewatched the second game? hard to blame you if you haven't. I haven't rewatched the first game. But we protected early and often for the outside screens and runs.

I have watched the game 3-4 times and agree with this. It was not an in game adjustment. We were defending the outside from the beginning.

A full roster of scholarship players is 85.
We have been under by an average of 10 since Boom took over. last year we only had 77 scholarship players on the roster.
We have not had a roster comprised of 40% upperclassmen (JRs & SRs) since Boom has been here. We've been loaded with TFr, RFr, TSo and RSo for the past two seasons while he builds this program.
So, no, most teams are not built like that.
Spurrier left the team in shambles. Boom's rebuilding job will begin to show thus year.
We've only got 17 SRs on the roster heading into this season. Only six of those are true Seniors. Ten of the 17 will probably contribute.
We're up to 82 scholarship players this year. This upcoming 2019 class will be the first full class of 25 since Boom arrived. He's been making-do and saving schollies for this first big class where the past few years of building relationships will pay off.
So, no, you're wrong.
