Yeah, he basically got what he wanted with Auburn's personnel and chain saws to do the work.

Why? The trees have no special place in my heart, but they did mean a lot to the Auburn family. It usually sucks to see any tradition fade away (though probably not for long in this case), and it especially sucks that it would stop because of the misdirected actions of one lunatic who takes a rivalry he's not even truly apart of far too seriously.

You DO know that like 90% of bama fan base on this thread were sorry to see them go. Most of us were embarrassed that Updyke did this. Quit acting like the whole entire fan base snuck over to Auburn and took turns pouring the herbicide on the trees.

I know there is a percentage of Bama fans that truly hated it for Auburn, there is a percentage that hated it because it makes Alabama look bad and there is a percentage that is ROFL. Not sure about the numbers, but I know it was not 90% that truly hated it for Auburn, more like 10%...

Most of us didn't really give a shite one way or the other and just cracked jokes because it's funny how sensitive Auburn fans all of sudden became about arboricide.

For those fans from other schools who expressed sincere sympathy at the loss of the Oaks - thank you. I think most people can step back and realize when something isn't just about football and rivalries.

For all those that are happy, don't see the significance, make excuses, the Alabama fans who showed up in anti-AU apparel on A-Day, etc. I feel very sorry for you. I can't imagine you are a very happy person with such a myopic view of the world. The ability to show sympathy or compassion is directly linked to narcissism and other psychological deficiencies.

For those just trolling to get a rise, whether you actually believe that or not, I lump you into the above category.

This is what I don't understand about the Updyke mentality. Saban had turned the club around in 08 with 12 wins and undefeated in 09. This was not enough? I see this all the time here, other blogs and occasional in comments in national print from all fanbases. The celebrating of one's team being less important than the denigration of another. It's a pettiness that I don't think is cultural nor generational (Updyke is older than I am). Just hard to figure.
