I have history and facts on my side. A long time ago, Alabama didn't play API. API had to petition the state legislture(somewhat like what UAB is trying to do) to play. They felt the need to give API more relevancy by playing the flagship school in their state(most people in the nation doesn't know where API is). No exaggeration, just facts. But, that's right, you people don't know the truth, and sure can't handle it, either!

Is this the most inconsequential firing in SEC history?

What do "history and facts" have to do with you making a run at being the most oulandish auburn-centric alabama poster on this site?

The guy who shot the congresswoman out in Arizona a few years back.

People overlook what Auburn is paying. We paid Barbee nearly 1.5 million per year. 6 year contract. He walks with roughly 9 million dollars. So another small school guy can come to Auburn, and make at worst 10-15 years worth of salary in 4 or 5 years. Sounds like a no brainer, given that every coach believes he will last well beyond the initial contract.
Pay is only part of the problem.
Most guys would rather keep working until a "sure thing" comes along than make a bunch of money and start their climb to be a HC over, depends on a coach's age and where they are in their career.
Sure those guys are out there, but for every Billy Donovan you find a mid majors you have guys like Grant, Barbee, and Kennedy (x2).
If Barbee was so dependent on Nike AAU connections, it was not only a bad career move for him going to Auburn, but it was a dumb decision by the AD to hire him. Auburn doesn't need a recruiter, they need a guy who can develop the talent he can get and adjust his style of play to that talent or has a style of play that best fits the talent available in the recruiting region for Auburn.
Auburn being an UnderArmor school does not hurt them in football because they are in a talent rich recruiting region for the sport. Auburn is also in a good talent rich region for basketball, but there are certain styles that will not work with the realistic talent they can continually get. One being the dribble drive, that offense is based around having more talent on the court than the opponent, better guards, better bigs who can out rebound and muscle their way in the paint. The other is a methodical offense based on sets. The south does not turn out great shooters or players with a high basketball IQ on a consistent basis, I'm not saying they are dumb, I'm saying the players do better running an offense where they can react and play basketball than trying to learn 90 sets where they are constantly having to think about where they are suppose to be and what they are suppose to do.
This hire is important to the SEC, a good fit and hire for Auburn will help elevate the perception of the conference when watching games which means it will be easier for the conference to consistently get 4+ bids in the tourney.
The SEC needs more coaches who let their teams play, coaches who run motion, flex, or Princeton based offenses and fundamentally sound defense. Teams who play games in the 70s-90s instead of the 40s-60s. You don't have to play full court as fast as possible, you just need to not wait until the final 10-15 seconds on the shot clock to run a set play.

But he retired, no way Ms. State would fire the best HC in their program's history.

i may never say this again, but i agree with your post.
it was pretty apparent within the first few months that barbee was not a good fit at auburn from a recruiting standpoint. Overall, i think he did a solid job recruiting, but once they actually got to campus, he had no clue how to keep them on the team and/or develop their skills.

Is him calling Auburn "API" some kind of dig or slap in the face?
