I take your word for it, that admission is more difficult for UGA than AU or Alabama but that doesn't mean that Georgia kids only go to AU or UA because they can't get in to UGA. Some may apply to UGA only because it is cheaper and if rejected are glad because now mommy and daddy are willing to pay OOS tuition to get in to Alabama or AU if they can gain admission; or they go to AU or UA because that was their initial preference and their parents didn't mind footing a larger bill.
State school loyalty means less and less these days and especially in an area of great migration. We see that in football recruiting where many Georgia kids have a far less sense of loyalty or connection to the "home state school" vs a less cosmopolitan state like Alabama. But for different reasons that aspect of recruiting is changing, though to a lesser degree, even in Alabama.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. After your first entry level job making $50-60k/year, employers don't give a damn where you went to college. And most entry level employers don't care either if you didn't major in something super specialized or specific to the job. Your poly sci degree at UGA doesn't give you a leg up on the Auburn kid with the same degree just because UGA may be more difficult to get into. The shite-posting about what different state schools are ranked is always hilarious for me to read. No one in the real world cares.
I can't emphasize how much I agree with your assessment in this matter. I worked for a very large regional corporation in Bham in a technical area (software development) and we didn't care where you graduated from or even if you had a BS or PhD, all we cared about was how we perceived that you were able to think and how well your personality would fit in a group effort. The only external issue was the last few years before I took early retirement was that they began gently pushing affirmative action but we just had none who qualified locally. We had to mine Africa, the Caribbean or mostly India, etc. and HR (mostly populated by minorities) thankfully, still gave us the call.

Up until about 1950 something the state of Georgia paid Georgia students out-of-state tuition to go to Auburn and Clemson. Even now I think the alum association does the same thing. Other than Georgia there are more Auburn alums than any other SEC school in my home county in middle Georgia.

US News College Rankings:
Auburn - 99
UGA - 48
That’s just one such ranking. They all greatly favor UGA.
You do realize that UF is ranked above UGA in that, right?

Yes. But the reality is Atlanta would probably win by a large margin in most age brackets. I don't say that to claim Birmingham sucks - my point is Birmingham is undervalued and most people turn up their nose at it but haven't spent any time there. They just know it's a city without a lot of widely-discussed features in a small state that most perceive as backwards.
Anyway, this is about the idea that people want Birmingham over Atlanta because of perceived crime issues in Atlanta. I just don't think that's a thing outside very small anecdotal batches of evidence.
I live in Bham and have most of my life and I have to say that your last 2 posts on the subject are very fair and accurate. Bham's crime rate is also nothing to boast about either but frankly I never even think about it and I don't live in a "protected" area. Most of the heavy crime is isolated to a couple of lightly visited areas.
I've been around much of the country and Bham has a few of the nicer residential areas in the country, as well as some unique shopping areas. East and especially South is nice, North and West, except for a few enclaves, not so.

I never made such a claim. Do you enjoy inventing arguments and then arguing against the argument you invented? That's called a Straw Man argument. As a Harvard fan, you should know that.

This is what this thread has become.
OP- Dumb kids from ATL metro can't get into UGA so they go to Auburn
Page 16 rebuttal- Birmingham has unique shopping opportunities

Firstly, we're three weeks away from UF v UGA hate week.
Secondly, nobody has ever claimed that UF was a shitty school with low admissions standards. You are arguing against an argument that hasn't been made. Just like tattoo above. Straw Man.

Emory, GT, Georgia State, & Southern Tech, & Morehouse are all IN the city of Atlanta. Huntsville is a nice town, Atlanta is a world renown city. It’s hosted the Olympics, it has the busiest airport in the world because there is a reason to be there. It has public transportation, opera, symphony, performing arts, professional sports, the championship of professional golf, it’s the 3rd largest film center in America. It’s the distribution hub of the entire southeast. Metro Atlanta has a bigger economy than the states of Mississippi and Alabama combined.
But yeah, Redstone is nice.

Tech is the only school for technical/ engineers. UAH is there because that is the identity of Huntsville. Corporate HQ is good for Business backgrounds, but the future is technology. That technology brings in big money. Atlanta is becoming a shithole and companies will put up with it for their mid-level employees. Huntsville will be forced to stay out of the shithole category because their employees are higher paid and harder to find. That is why Auburn is setting up in Huntsville. Bringing the Mountain to Mohammed.

Dallas and Atlanta are kinda of similar, I don’t listen to country music but Fort Worth is for Country Music than Dallas with people out there with the Cowboy Culture but anyway Both Dallas and ATL are similar
Both Cities are Blue obviously
Both Cities have A lot of Fortune 500 companies
Highland Park/University Park and Buckhead without the crime are similar with old money and Rich folks
Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Alpharetta, Marietta, Roswell and Sandy Springs are all similar with good K-12 schools, McMansions and Karens
ATL is SEC with UGA, Auburn, Bama, Florida and Tennessee alums
Dallas is still BIG 12 but when OU and TX come it’s SEC with lots of OU, TX, Arkansas and A&M alums in DFW

Birmingham is 10x better than Atlanta with a 1/3 of the traffic. Atlanta is a generic southern city like Dallas. Dallas for Country music culture and Atlanta for hip-hop.
I'm from Baton Rouge and have lived in Dallas and spent a lot of Time in Atlanta. This is funny and true.

Plenty of government or government subsidized jobs in Huntsville - good for Auburn.
