While I agree, do you not think it is somewhat problematic from an optics/fairness point that they were jumped by an idle Miami team?
I think the committee fricked up by putting byu in front of Miami BEFORE this week. The message to ND is clear but the BYU jump still looks bad imo.
The reality being SEC/BIG 10 has more clout to protect their championship game integrity on economics alone even. Somewhat surprised they bailed out the ACC but likely market share issue and a join a conference message to ND.

Sorry, I'm just a coon-arse from Louisiana...heard we are not too smart. I'll clarify. In 2016, Penn State, the B10 Champion, was left out of the CFP playoff in favor of Ohio State, a team it had beaten during the regular season. In 2014, B12 Co-Champs, TCU & Baylor, decided to game the system by not declaring a Conference champ, hoping to get both teams selected. Due to stupidity and arrogance often found in the Lone Star state, neither team was selected by the playoff Committee. There, fixed it for you. Besides, I thought TCU supporters were permanently banned from the SEC Rant due to the 65-7 wire brushing Georgia applied in the Natty.

Significantly different landscape and financial situations vs now. NIL and NCAA control significantly changes things too. The message here probably being: “sec, big 10, ACC, fix your damn championship selection, but we’ll bail you out this year!!” Too much money at play. But, in 2016–Clemson and Washington were both in the top 4 going into their championship week. Both win. So, dropping them would be rough. So big 10 was only getting 1 into playoffs. Though as you mentioned rough for penn st given their win vs osu.

quote:Exactly. They have 3 losses. Other teams should have been put in ahead of them. A team can go undefeated, 11-1, 10-2 and they get left out. What is that telling them?
Bama got in on name only and should have been left out.
It's all about the brand name and not your record.

When it goes to 16 teams, take 1 and 2 of each 4 conferences and give them the auto bid. 3-6 play on CCG weekend in each P4 conference so that you end up with 4 teams that equal to 16.
Not sure if you saw the saw Jon Gruden clip but this is very similar to what he proposed. Auto bids for the Power 4 Championship finalists except the ACC since they were weak this year then seed the bubble teams and Group of 5 conf champions ,i.e Miami BYU ND Vandy Tulane JMU and have then play an extra game to play in

Those games are now exhibitions.
For teams like LSU that generally watch them versus playing in them, sure. We know... conference championships aren't important...to teams that rarely win them anyway.

College football is on its way to having only 2 mega conferences. Once that happens, the playoffs will resemble the NFL, where only the 2 conference champs play for the NC.

Yes - but the SEC has earned that bias.

By negotiating a huge $$ deal with ESPN?
That's not settling things on the field, it's settling things in dark, smoky rooms.
These participation trophy times are not good. 12 teams in a playoff, it's stupid.

Yes - but the product and level of play in the SEC at that point in time is what drew the huge $$ and enabled that contract - and that established what some see as a bias. The SEC is still the best conference top to bottom and week in / week out during the regular season there are very few if any bad games in this league. TV networks love that.

No disagreement here, 2 was not enough, 4 was close but occaisionally you had team 5 or maybe even 6 that could stake a claim. 12 is too many. It doesn't matter how many you put in - someone will be ranked n+1 or n+2 and will be outside looking in. So if they go to say 16 teams, the #17 and #18 team will be butt hurt that they didn't get in. Would they skip out on a bowl? (they might if their initials are ND)
