Everyone who is saying it is automatically a strike if the batter steps out of the box are wrong. Here is the rule.

Really?

LINK

quote:

If the batter steps out the batter’s box during the pitch and the pitcher delivers the pitch, a strike is called on the batter. If there is a runner on base, and the batter leaves the batter’s box with both feet during the pitch and the pitcher delivers the pitch, two strikes are called on the batter. If the pitcher doesn’t deliver the pitch there is no penalty for the batter or pitcher.

The announcers also thought that Jay Johnson would be suspended for today’s game and explained why.

Really play at plate was not important. Batter stepped out box automatically called strike had two on him so strike three

Btw, the same play happened in the 1st vanderbilt and Tenn game where the catcher stepped in front of home plate with a live pitch and absolutely nothing was called but “out”

Define “delivered pitch.”

The ball never made it to the plate.

Yes, really. I don’t know what level of baseball that rule you posted applies to, but it isn’t college baseball. From the same site you referenced, here is the rule for NCAA baseball.

NCAA Rule on Batter

quote:

b. A batter shall not leave his position in the batter’s box after the pitcher comes to the set position or starts the windup unless permission is granted by the umpire.

PENALTY for b —If the pitcher pitches, the umpire shall call “ball” or “strike,” as the case may be. The batter leaves the batter’s box at the risk of having a strike delivered, unless “Time” is requested and granted from the umpire. If the pitch is made, the ball is live.

quote:

1) The batter must keep at least one foot in the batter’s box throughout the time at bat. Exceptions—A batter may leave the batter’s box but not the dirt area surrounding home plate when:

d) A defensive player attempts a play on a runner at any base.

In college, if the batter steps out of the batter’s box it is clearly not an automatic strike or out. And the batter can clearly leave the box if the catcher runs out over the top of the plate.

But I admire your persistence in being wrong.

For the batter to have an influence he must get time out called by the Ump.

Never said he was…but it would have actually been better for him to remain in the box as the pitch was made…

Bro, just give up. You’re completely wrong. A photo from 70 feet away proves nothing. But the actual video proves that Brady Neal never touched home OR stepped in front of the plate until he possesses the ball.

It’s okay to admit you’re wrong.

And the batter stepped out the box before the ball arrived. Which is a strike. He already had two strikes so that should have been an out and inning over

Right there was like 6 things that went wrong on that one play. Definetely need a video replay in that situation
