While thinking about Vandy's chances of defending its national title in baseball, I realized that I didn't feel overly optimistic, not because I don't have faith in our team, but because it feels to me like the road to defending a baseball title seems longer and harder and filled with more landmines than other sports.

So I was wondering which national titles people here think are the toughest to defend, and why?

Vandy should know how hard that is.

Football. Motivation is more difficult once you win a title. In basketball and baseball you can have some letdowns the next year and still make it to the title game. Just one letdown in football, and you're not likely to make it.

With how large the basketball and baseball bracket are it sure makes both of them much harder

Indeed, that one is quite difficult for anyone but Nebraska or UMES.

Baseball - if they so much as throw a biscuit at you as a Junior, you have to go. It's your only leverage (as in going back to school or not).

Basketball. You have to win 6 in a row in a single elimination tournament. And you'll likely be gutted by the draft after you win it as all players are eligible.

Baseball is difficult due to the parity of college baseball but the entire tournament is double elimination.

In the last 25 years, baseball has had 3 sets of repeat champions (USC, Oregon State, and LSU).

Football has had 2 sets in the same time frame (Nebraska and Bama).

Basketball also had 2 sets (Florida and Duke)

Didn't LSU win like five titles in a row during the '90s? I also remember Oregon State and South Carolina repeating in recent years. It's not baseball. It has to be basketball. The '91 and '92 Duke Blue Devils and '06, '07 Gators are the only teams to repeat as national champions since Wooden's UCLA teams. It's extremely to repeat as champions in basketball due to all the turnover after a successful run. Championship caliber teams rarely stay together for two or three years like they do in other sports.

This. You can lose up to 4 games in the college baseball postseason and still win the title. College is one and done from the beginning.

Football. Check the records, it is a one and done sport. Try that for pressure.
