The whole letter they cite is intentionally misinterpreted. Jefferson's warning was not that the church would take over the state, but rather the state would take over the church. As we have seen in England, Sweden, with disastrous results.

The Supreme Court would disagree that what happened is unconstitutional since they just ruled in favor of a high school coach who was fired for praying on the field after games. The Freedom from Religion Foundation are totally wrong to say this was unconstitutional.

You don't have to be a priest, pastor or ordained minister of any type to Baptize someone.

You mean like attending a church/temple/synagogue/mosque/mandir and practicing their own faith?

I don't think it is misinterpreted. Unless this group was not paying attention in U.S. History class, the motivation for this part of the 1st amendment was literally centuries of state sponsored discrimination or persecutions of citizens in Europe and elsewhere on the basis of religion (usually a "state religion").

James Madison put it well:

quote:

It was the belief of all sects at one time that the establishment of Religion by law, was right & necessary; that the true religion ought to be established in exclusion of every other; And that the only question to be decided was which was the true religion.

We are teaching the world the great truth that Governments do better without Kings & Nobles than with them. The merit will be doubled by the other lesson that Religion flourishes in greater purity, without than with the aid of Gov. (Letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822).

our city does a 40 Days of Prayer campaign every year with all the local churches and it's on social media and in the newspaper. This foundation tried to come in a few years back and stop it. They found out really quick that our community did not subscribe to their brand of liberal logic.

whoa, you’re confusing this term with woke wackos. I’m an atheist and have taken an Oath to defended every American’s Right to worship whatever god they chose.

I'm in the same boat.

You can't celebrate other religions displaying their beliefs across campus, but scoff when Christians do it. At that point, you're not asking for "Freedom from Religion"...you're asking for "Freedom from Christianity".

If this is your worldview, and you have no issues proselytizing to those who don’t want it because you (not they) believe someone to be “living in sin”, then you absolutely cannot complain when an atheist (as dumb as they also might be) for pushing their views loudly into the public sphere.

1) It was totally voluntary, was it not?

Honest question. When was the last time someone witnessed to you for Christianity?
Answer this honestly.

You realize you just proved his point, right?

He said:
quote:

Jefferson's warning was not that the church would take over the state, but rather the state would take over the church.

Madison said:
quote:

The merit will be doubled by the other lesson that Religion flourishes in greater purity, without than with the aid of Gov.

So Madison said that religion would flourish without the aid of government. In other words he did not want the state to mandate religion and take religion over.

Separation of Church and State is not found in any official document - it was in a letter written to the Danbury Baptist Church by Thomas Jefferson if I recall but had no authority whatsoever. If it did, then he was actually contradicting his own thoughts

So Madison quite literally says what the poster you quoted wrote, and you can't see that? You must be one of those people who voted for mayor Beetlejuice up there in the Windy City.

frick off, he is a hypocrite like most bible thumping people are. Do your good deeds. praying and worshiping in private, anyone that brings attention to themselves so others can say “what a good Christian” is someone untrustworthy.

They don't give a frick anymore. This thread being on page 9 is plenty of evidence of that.

So, it’s illegal to voluntarily baptize but perfectly legal to promote sodomy and abortion on school grounds ? ok Marxist trash.
