It kind of sucks that so many teams are turning to the 3-4 because the fact that Bama was one of the only teams that was known to be using it really helped us have a monopoly on kids that fit the scheme. Now that people are switching to it, there's a lot more competition for the recruits we're looking at.

Yeah Newton shredded Bama's 3-4. Dude had a whopping 40 yards on the ground.

Alabama 's base D is the 3-4 but really they are multiple,I have seen them in even fronts a lot of times.

are one of your secondary guys like a LB when you run the 4-2-5 variant?

Nope---take out a LB, slide the wolb to end, add a third corner. Got to have safeties that play the run like LBs though.

The 3-4 works...if you have the personnel. The keys are the LBs and a true NG. If either of those isn't up to snuff then the defense can struggle to reach its potential. If you can manage to apply pressure to the QB and still hold the front line with just 3 true DL then I don't see how it will ever NOT be effective. Even the great Cam Newton was getting stoned by the 3-4 when he came to Bama and that was probably one of the weakest DL we've fielded since moving to the 3-4.

I'd add to that in saying that all defensive sets work if you have the personnel. It's really nothing more than a philosophy type thing. In reality.. Alabama ran what was effectively a 4-3 half the time.

When LSU runs a 3rd down package with say Mingo at DE it's the same concept as a 3-4, jumbo NT and a pass rushing LB/DE who can rush/drop into coverage. 3-4 fits Alabamas talent and that's why they run it. 4-2-5 fits LSUs which is why we run a what's basically a nickel formation as our base.

I personally think 3-4 is as good as it gets for stopping a mobile QB. Against straight up passing teams I don't think it's as strong unless you have a true freak or two at OLB (think Aaron Curry)

I've always wished we would run the 3-4, but we just can't recruit the players. Most teams have the trouble with the NT, but I think that wouldn't be a big deal for us...the LBs on the other hand seem damned near impossible for us to come up with. Seems our high school system either breeds them fast or big...not big and fast ;) Seriously though, Arkansas has turned out so few high caliber MLBs that we have trouble having two for the two-deep in a 4-3...I can only imagine needing the 4 to 5 needed for the 3-4.

Well, that plus Willy Robinson once attempted a 3-4 at Seattle and it was widely regarded as one of the worst defenses ever in the NFL...so I think with the staff we have, we will keep the 4-3 :)

I guess the fact that Alabama is in nickel and dime, with four down linemen, is lost on you. Alabama may run a 3-4 base, but Saban's defense is as multiple as it gets. And FWIW, the 3-4 is based around stopping a running QB. That's why the defense was effective against the wishbone and other option oriented offenses in the 70s and 80s.
