On the flip side, I'm sure the Duke basketball program is salivating at the thought of adding Alabama and LSU every year.

Well if tonight's games don't seal the deal for them they are never coming

only fair ... the programs yearning for national respect have to earn their way into conversation!
Don't yearn .... earn ....
Last 14 games: Tide 5 LSU 9
Nice try though.

What is this?

Depends on how it shakes out
The Big 10 and SEC stand poised to reap enormous benefits. The PAC has no credible option for expanding. The Big 12 has bad options to expand but might be able to make it happen (FSU, USC, Louisville, Ga Tech, and a North Carolina school might be an option)
I like the idea of the SEC adding NC and Duke in the sense that they would arguably make the SEC the #1 basketball conference as well as the #1 baseball and #1 football conference in the country.
But...
1) it is harder to see how the SEC should best balance a four pod system in a football sense if they added NC and Duke.
2) adding two schools from one state doesn't maximize cable money like adding a single school from NC and a single school from Va would.
I have to think what the SEC would most prefer would be adding North Carolina and Va Tech - to get this they will just have wait for the ACC to collapse (with Maryland and Virginia leaving this could happen really fast). NC could easily decide instead to go to the Big 10 with Duke if the Big 10 extends an invite to both schools - but I'm not sure the Big 10 will invite Duke and NC would be a bit insecure about the SEC inviting NC State (the Texas/A&M example may show them that this will greatly enhance the prestige of NC State and make NC State the #1 football program in the state and perhaps eventually the #1 athletic program in teh state)

Bye bye ACC, nobody will miss you.
Virgina and Georgia Tech to the Big 10
Virgina Tech and NC St. to the SEC
FSU, Miami, Clemson, NC, Duke and Louisville to the Big 12.
Boston College, Wake Forest, Pitt and Syracuse to the Big East.
You left out Notre Dame. Perhaps they can keep an "invisible" membership in the ACC.

Maryland (already confirmed)

UNC
The Big 10 isn't getting UNC or Duke without getting both. I see them sticking with 15 schools until they can convince Notre Dame to be #16.

i hope the big conferences fail so bad

You have to think adding Notre Dame finally seems like a possibility - the question is whether the politics could work (there are some issues on things like stem cell research which are actually crucial things to come to an agreement on for ND to enter the Big 10)
But if Virginia and Notre Dame made 16 they could sit tight with that number or even expand to 20 (Virginia, Notre Dame, NC, Duke, Ga Tech, Kansas seem like schools that might be added to me)

I definitely hope the Big 10 fails at least. I can understand the reasons for the SEC adding Texas A&M and the Pac-12 inviting Utah and Colorado. The Big 10 is bringing in these schools just based on sheer greed. When has Maryland and Rutgers ever been relevant in football? When has Rutgers ever been relevant in anything? Those schools bring nothing to the table except for their TV markets. They don't improve the Big 10 athletically at all.

Well the "gump pod" would most assuredly consist of AUB,TN and either Duke,KY,Vandy or Mizzou

The Pac 12 would probably be willing to look at UNLV, SMU and Houston to start. They were willing to take Tech and Baylor so if they want to expand in Texas thats all there really is left. UNLV has a big enough athletic budget to justify being Pac 12 and isn't any worse than the Arizona schools. While some might complain, if they want to expand UNLV is one of the better remaining options overall. They are certainly a more well rounded school than Boise.
And they aren't going to want Air Force but its not b/c they are left leaning with a diastase of the military. Nobody will want the military schools b/c they aren't going to be able to cover full cost of attendance for players. That will soon a requirement to play the top FBS conferences.

UNLV they might be able to justify (along the same lines as the Arizona schools), but no way they'll go for anyone in Texas that isn't UT. Texas markets would be nice, but SMU and Houston aren't legitimately pulling any weight in Texas sports broadcasting

Adding NC State would be akin to a third-term abortion. It would make Missouri seem like a sensible addition by comparison.
