What you had was a team that had an entire offseason to prepare for this game. They had a massive chip on their shoulders over the playoff thing and Malzahn wants to beat Alabama a little more too. Give the home atmosphere a little credit too.

Couple that with a first time starting QB on the road and a mediocre defense and you got what you got.

1. Very loud and hostile road environment.
2. QB making his first start
3. Several of FSU’s starters were former Bama players looking to prove sonething.
4. FSU had a new offense and QB which Alabama had no film of.
5. Gus Malzhan
6. And the biggest contributor, Alabama went in with the mentality that FSU was a 2-10 team and just showing up would ensure a victory.

No it won’t. First of all appt state over Mich right off the top of my head. Osu(won natty) vt(didn’t make a bowl). Last year nd lost to an average mid major. Played for natty. Hell this isn’t even as bad as uga losing to muschamp usce team(didn’t even have a qb)

It is akin to the OSU loss vs VT in 2014

I wonder about his defenses long term, though.

He doesn't coach defense, so he needs to find the next Smart or Pruitt. I'm just thankful we don't have Golding. Cost UM the game yesterday.

For sure. At least Michigan had some players and it's a rivalry game.

FSU has some talent too… how they so thoroughly imploded is beyond me.

but Alabama was actually outgained as far as yardage in both passing and rushing

Stats have to be viewed in context.

Tennessee got 198 of their 410 yards in the 4th quarter when they were down 17. Up to that point, Bama had nearly a 100 yard advantage in total yards.

Yardage totals don't win games.

Vs FBS teams not named Alabama:

Tennessee is averaging 43.4 ppg. They scored 20 vs Bama
Georiga is averaging 37.4. They scored 21 vs Bama
Vandy is averaging 46.2. They scored 14 vs Bama
Missouri is averaging 37.6. They scored 24 vs Bama

I'm not particularly a fan of the "keep everything in front of you" strategy when you get a lead, but at some point you've got to admit what they're doing is working pretty danged well. If they can fix the maddening tendency to totally botch assignments and angles on a handful of running plays each game, it's going to work even better.
