He’s a friend of Elko. Was the DC at Army. No idea what to think. Thought we we were going after Baker, but probably turned us down … First Elko hire I’m meh on. At least our LB’s won’t suck
he is an elite recruiter the only decent coach of napiers staff

Anm hit a home run here and foley is celebrating the loss of a elite recruiter

Surely Elko is bringing in another guy and slapping a "Co-DC" tag on this dude.

If not, this is the worst hire since Chaggot Morris hired John Chavis. It's WORSE than the Chavis hire.

It's not miracle work to be successful as a DC at Army since Monken runs the triple option and thus controls the clock most often with the ground game.

He was fired as Co-DC at UNC

This should really get the juices flowing with all the top defensive recruits in the country. I approve this hire one hunnert percent.

I actually like this hire for A&M. Guy appears to be a good LB coach and a good recruiter. Elko is effectively the DC similar to Sark calling the offense for Texas..

I don’t know if it will work for them or not, and it isn’t a big splash, but it’s a pretty good hire imo.

It really does look to me like Elko is being systematic with his hires. He knows what he wants, and he's got a plan. It may turn out that Elko is a great hire, or it may be a dud.

This is the first of his staff hires I'm unsure about. I do remember that Bateman was a stud at Army with vastly inferior talent, because I've been going to Army games for almost a decade now. Army's defense has never been on the level he had it after he left. I think Bateman will work well with Elko.

He was really sub par at UNC. I’m not sure how this can be viewed as a positive hire based on his track record unless you consider “gets along with Elko” as his primary strength.

Why I have no idea what to think about him. He ran a 3-4 at UNC, which is definitely not Elko's defense. He and Elko know each other, and he ran a 4-2-5 at Army like Elko does. It will be Elko's defense.

Judging by how his linebackers played this season.....Texas A&M screwed up with this hire. How do guys who fail at multiple schools, keep getting jobs, promotions and raises?

Interesting that A&M is all about Elko really running the defense. Not sure they should want a HC micromanaging either side when he should be a CEO in today's world

Sark must’ve given up play calling this season

Elko is great at defense. Hopefully this works out better than the disaster that was Fisher, but I have my doubts. I loved all of Elko's hires until today. Seems like a "Fisher" kind of move.

He hired a D line coach and made a L.B. coach his Defensive coordinator. From a team who's defense was atrocious. Ranked somewhere in the 100's. Bold move.

It’s going to be Elko’s defense. And this guy knows what Elko wants to accomplish.

Some just told me that Bateman is a master at defense.
