Dude is a baller. I don't know why he is better than Showers, but I am not paid to make those calls. It BETTER be the right one and Sumlin better be ready to park him if the shite hits the fan.

This is key.
Let's not have a Sherman rerun of 2010 where he stuck with a struggling Jerrod Johnson for WAY too long
Sumlin's the coach, though--here's hoping he made a solid decision (wasn't pulling for either Showers or Manziel, just want the best guy back there).

Right because A&M's OL is the cause for concern.
Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, Pat Lewis say Hi.
So do Trey Williams, Christine Michael, and Ryan Swope.
What about our defense you ask?

Stewart runs the same offense at St. Pius X, I believe, as well as 75% of the state of Texas. It's an easy offense to learn.
Kenny Hill is a great talent, and being a proven winner is a great thing, but he doesn't have the natural ability of Kohl Stewart. The ball flies off his hand. I know some people seem hesitant about Kohl because he wasn't a Sumlin recruit, and everyone tends to blindly follow the new coach and rationalize everything he does, but seriously watch Kohl play. I haven't seen the ball fly out of a kids hand like that at such a young age since Stafford. No joke. Kohl looks like he will have the arm strentgh of an NFL first rounder. You play that kid, imo... And you be fricking excited for him to get here.

This has to be the most uninformed post in a decade. ALL 4 A&M QBs would START at Assrape U right now. They have NO TALENT at that position.

He didn't say anything about your OL.
It's never a good thing when you have to start a freshman in the SEC.

A little worried about the decision. Our O-Line will protect him pretty well, but he's so small that it may only take a few good hits to do him in. Hope he can stay healthy and bulk up.

I understand your concern. Maybe this article can help you feel better about it.
High school football COACHES talk him up.
He may not turn out to be worth a shite at QB in college, and could turn out to suck especially hard in the SEC, but he certainly is no scrub or hailmary by Sumlin, and I can guarantee you this decision was not taken lightly and not made by one man. Give JFF a chance and support him.
That said...if he sucks...Sumlin better bench his arse immediately. Sumlin needs to keep the pressure on the starter to perform with perfection all the time and make excellence a habit. Sumlin needs to be more loyal to the team and the university that any one player (which is a problem we have had for the last 20+ years).

Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) dealt Tivy its only two losses this year and coach Hank Carter could not have been more complimentary.
"We really didn't stop him," Carter admitted. "The first game (37-33) he ran for a ton of yards, but nobody else (hurt us.). Most of his runs were on scrambles. The last game (48-42) we tried to eliminate his running, but he passed (for 351 yards).
"He is a tough matchup – very fast and strong. He's probably the best playmaker I've ever seen. We faced Matt Stafford (No. 1 NFL draft pick by the Detroit Lions) when I was at Stephenville and Johnny is a lot tougher to deal with. I feel like the Manziel kid can do everything. He doesn't necessarily do everything conventionally, but the end result is as good as it gets. He's Brett Favre on a motorcycle. He's really explosive and runs through tackles. Once he breaks the line of scrimmage, he's got a good stiff arm."
quote:
Steele (Cibola, Texas) coach Mike Jinks calls Manziel "the best quarterback I've ever seen play high school football. Moreso than anybody else, he is a joy to watch and coach against. His competitive spirit is unmatched. There are certain guys you are lucky to play against. He made me a much better coach. He is a folk hero around here."

It's certainly an exciting pick if nothing else. He is a true playmaker that just makes things happen. He can see all over the field and makes solid throws though he doesn't have a true cannon. Mainly though the dude exudes confidence and swag and is a slippery and rocket fast machine.
The real question has been if they could reel in his improvisation to play within the offense and not try to be Superman which works in HS but leads to interceptions and pain in the SEC. In the Spring he clearly wasn't there. Then he got with a big time QB coach for the Summer and came back and has killed it in Fall Practice so far. In the Scrimmage Saturday he was 18-22 for good yardage and TD's and no picks to go with some solid rushing stats, and that is with a touch equaling a sack.
A&M has never started a Freshman (even though he was an early enrollee and RS so he's been around) for their first game so it will be interesting at least. Could blow up in a monster cloud or it could change everything for A&M. We will see.

Reggie McNeal played as a freshman and lit up a then #1 OU team. That was a mid season game. That season Kevin Sumlin was the offensive coordinator under RC Slocum. So, he was comfortable using a young gunslinger to attack defenses. When RC was fired after the season, Sumlin was hired at OU.

I just looked him up to see how big he is.
This thread led me to believe he was 5'10 170.
He's listed at 6'1 200. Not that small at all.
I look forward to watching him play in 2 weeks.

He is listed at 6'1'' on the roster but just about everybody who has seen him in person says he is right at 6'. Really shouldn't matter in college...he will be playing out of the shotgun almost the entire time.
