y'all only had 8 previous collies?

Not all collies either. At least according to Wiki, the first couple were other breeds, including a Sheltie. (Much better dog)

During World War II, Americans could purchase a rank for their pet as part of a fundraiser for the K-9 Corps, a division that used trained dogs in active war zones. A&M cadets raised $100 to make Reveille a general. Enough donations poured in that the students commissioned a local artist to paint a portrait of “the General.”

We did it for freedom.

Yeah this seems totally voluntary on Twix's part.

Just like the Southern colonies "attracted" all that free labor in the 1600's

Nah. Rev VIII is very much alive & kicking.
But the "Rev gig" isn't a lifetime appointment.
Once she starts to show signs of fatigue, her very capable vets let Company E-2 (the Macot Company in the Corps) know it's time to let her relax permanently.

The retirement decision was made in consultation with her veterinarians at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Reveille VIII, who turns nine years old next spring, has participated in hundreds of athletic events, student programs and other activities since coming to campus.
