I'd bet money he was in on it. There's no way he's that stupid. And if he is that stupid then there's no way he should be a leader on any defense

More likely that he got catfished and then was embarrassed about it, so he lied about it later to his family because of the embarrassment.

More likely that the truth is somewhere in the middle. He is to blame for not coming clean sooner, but highly unlikely that this was some sort of plot from the beginning to get acclaim.
