And frankly, that’s where the SEC has been headed all along. Fourteen was just a convenient stopping point while the realignment smoke cleared. Sixteen makes much more sense.

Stay tuned. It’s not a matter of whether the SEC will expand. It’s just a matter of when.

While the SEC would prefer North Carolina or maybe Duke, those two figure to stick together in the ACC. N.C. State might be looking for an escape hatch, especially if the ACC is weakened by the exit of Florida State, which might take Miami and/or Clemson with it.

Enlisting N.C. State in the SEC would give greater exposure in North Carolina, including top-30 media markets Charlotte and Raleigh.

And then there’s Virginia Tech, which long has seemed a better fit for the SEC. Adding the Hokies would give the SEC greater cachet in the Norfolk and Tidewater areas of Virginia while also edging into the Washington, D.C., market.

FWIW, here is what I believe will happen (in order of sequence):

Big 12 adds FSU/Clemson/GaTech/Pitt

SEC adds VaTech/NCState (after making strong run at UNC)

Big10 adds UVA/UNC/Duke/Maryland

Big 12 goes to 16 and tries to lure Notre Dame, and shoots for 2 of these 4: Notre Dame/BostonCollege/Miami/Louisville

This shite is going to kill college football. Goodbye traditional rivalries. Goodbye having a chance to go to an away game at a particular school more than once or twice in your fricking lifetime. Not because you can't afford to go, but because your team plays there once every 18 years.

Both are good fits IMO. Mizzou won't be in the East for long.

We'll still get to go to Starkville every other year

Agreed. I feel like this is too much upheaval.

Well, if you want to look on the bright side, I doubt the SEC ever expands past 16, so at least if you're "anti-expansion" once these next moves all play out for the most part the SEC will be done/settled.

I actually think it's a good thing. It's going to boost SEC schools well over $30mil (maybe even $40mil) per year in TV money ... which in the longrun is only going to make each school in the SEC better and the league as a whole richer/stronger.

That would be awful for LSU.

ETA: the only two appealing away games would be Ole Miss and Texas A and M.

I think people will come up with all kinds of scenarios (pods, Aub/Bama to East, etc.), but at the end of the day, they will keep it simple:

-VaTech/NCSt to the East
-Mizzou to the West
-9game conference schedule (7 division games, 2 cross-division games)

Justice for Updyke.

I don't think Bama would be too keen on breaking it off either and they would be in the same division with their other favorite team.

Let the meatball roll.

Things change all the time why not we have to one step ahead of everybody else.

It won't kill it but we will all think back to and miss simpler times when things made sense

I'm not saying I dislike that idea, hell I love it but I'd miss playing Auburn and Alabama every year.

VaTech won't go anywhere without Virginia. Their state govt. won't let it happen.

This would likely make the West even stronger than the East but honestly I don't see a logically geographical way to balance it other than maybe swapping Auburn and Vandy. Auburn is near the Georgia state line and Vandy is in the far West of Tennessee.
