On the surface it seems stupid, he had one lucky season and hasn't done much since. But taking a closer look, perhaps Auburn wanted to give the impression (to future coaching candidates) that coaches won't be kicked to the curb seemingly prematurely.

Auburn is a decent enough coaching gig, and adding a low-stress, low-expectation environment to that may be very attractive to head coaching candidates.

That's why the last coach was fired 2 years removed from the NC and another is on the hotseat after 2013.

Auburn' all time record 742-421-47(.633)
Malzahn's record at Auburn 27-13 (.675)
Maybe they know who they are

Bama fans only worry about championships, Auburn fans only worry about Bama...

Or maybe Auburn doesn't want to make that mistake again

He just got an extension through 2020...how exactly do you reckon his seat is hot?

His extension was through 2019 before. He got one more year. Stop the presses.

His seat is certainly hot. When has money ever stopped us from making a change? Not sure how nobody here can grasp the concept of appearances.

Alabama's all time record 864-326-43 (.718)
Saban's record at Alabama 100-18 (.847)

So you're acknowledging that Bama will go back to 8-win regular seasons after Saban retires? If so, I concur.

Good point about Malzahn's record at AU being roughly equivalent to Bama's all time record. 8.1 wins per year vs 8.6 per year.

Or were you trying to go some other way with this?

So Bama without Saban is still better than au with malzahn?

What Saban has done at Alabama is too good for Bama as well as every other program

Edit: but nice framing by the way using wins per season. Considering that not too long ago it was impossible to win more than 11 games in a season. Winning percentage is a much better indicator

So Bama with Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Paul Bryant, Gene Stallings AND Nick Saban is barely better than au with malzahn?
FIFY.

12 game regular season X .718 winning percentage = 8.6 wins
12 game regular season X .675 winning percentage = 8.1 wins
