OMG what stupidity! More officer's in just World War II alone came from Texas A&M than West Point et al!

Please get off your knees and zip them back up!

University of Texas was known as Texas university until the 60th legislature changed the name from TU to UT.

Not quite.

In 1861, during the Civil War, the Federal Government passed a law creating the land grant colleges to teach the "agriculture and mechanic arts." The new law was aided by the secession of many states that did not support the plans.

The State of Texas wanted their sons & daughters to be more than farmers & mechanics, they wanted a first class education (law, medicine, science & business).

The Texas Constitution was adopted in 1876. Article VII provided that "The Legislature shall as soon as practicable, establish, organize, and provide for the maintenance, support, and direction of a university of the first class, to be located by a vote of the people of this State, and styled "The University of Texas." The Legislature vested the governance of the University in the Board of Regents of The University of Texas.

That’s absurd. Many many many more students at A&M currently come from multigenerational Texas roots than do students at tu.

But A&M is really more like a midwest school. Few multi-generation Texans, very little Texas culture.

From where are you getting this?

Think about that...a school with an enrollment of 2,000 sent 20,000 servicemen into WW2.

Help me with the math.

2,000 students implies ~ 500 per class. 20,000 WW2 servicemen at 500 per class equates to 40 years of students/graduates.

So you are saying the equivalent of every A&M graduate/student over a 40 year period fought in WW2, or every A&M student or former student aged 18-58 fought in WW2, correct?

Perhaps you could provide a link?

Very fair questions. I don't know the answers to your questions, but here are the links:

A&M enrollment size 1935:

LINK

The 2000 figure was actually from 1932, so that's my mistake. It jumped up quite a bit right before the war started, then plummeted during the war. So, that explains some of your very fair questions.

Here is a link for the other figures:

quote:

Many Texas A&M graduates served during World War I. By 1918, 49% of all graduates of the college were in military service, more than any other school.[19] In early September 1918, the entire senior class enlisted

Many Aggies again served in the military during World War II, with the college producing 20,229 combat troops. Of those, 14,123 Aggies served as officers, more than any other school and more than the combined total of the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy.[31][32] During the war, 29 A&M graduates reached the rank of general.[19]

Thank you very much for responding with a real answer.

With an enrollmenr of 6,600+ in 1941, it is a lot easier to get to the 20,000 who served their country.

Nothing but respect for men & women who choose to serve.

Lots and lots of experience with both sides, in both cities, etc. I find A&M people more agreeable. But when people think about Texas they obviously think of the Longhorns and UT people.
