The assumption that a "caretaker" from the outside is willing to take a one year deal is an uneducated one. Any guy that comes to Arkansas will demand a 5 year deal and in Gruden's case it may take a 10 year deal.

Any coach that's worth anything is also going to demand that they have their own staff. Any coach that takes a job that requires him to retain the current staff is Weak and will implode in due time.

You need a strong leader that demands that things are run his way. I can't imagine for one second a good coach like Saban letting anyone tell him who's going to be on his staff.

Only two holdovers at Penn State (larry johnson sr. & ron vanderlinden both great recruiter)

Replacing Tom Bradley (the dc an alum with 33 years on staff) who refused to return unless it was as the boss is Ted Roof.

Roof coincedentialy was the best man at O'Brien's wedding when they both were on O'Leary's staff @ Tech.

Roof's performance or lack thereof at Auburn was not enough to negate his hiring.Point being a new boss wants guys he knows and trusts working for him.

Very true - no HC candidate (worth a shite) is going to give Arky/Long the time of day once he's told he has to retain Bobby's staff for this season.

The new guy is gonna want to run his own show, and put in his own system/scheme's. If it's a big name coach, with a history of winning, then he would never agree to take another coach's staff/system.

I think they will promote one of the staff for the 2012 year but have started talks with these NFL coaches to guage interest for next year. It really is the only solution to try to salvage this season.
I will say that if they talk to Gruden and he agrees to take the HC job it would put this year in jeapordy but be great for the long term..a big spalsh would save and elevate recruiting to new levels.

NFL coaching experience, saying you've coached Steve Young and Tom Brady, and Super Bowl rings are great selling points to recruits, especially if we want to continue what Petrino started in making Arkansas QB-U.

I think the same...which is great for the current team but disastrous for recruiting. Oh well. I guess we can sacrifice one recruiting year to make sure the right hire is made.

The timing is downright fricking awful.

I could see us naming a coach mid way through so he could start on the recruiting trail early on if it's a guy that isn't working now.

This could be the case, Meyer set the precedent last December by getting a waiver to recruit as Fickel's staff practiced for the bowl game

If and that is a big if, we could get JG, we would be Quarterback U. Every qb in the country would try to come here.

Why does everyone jock Gruden so hard? For being this alleged QB guru, can anyone tell me a single QB at Tampa Bay that got better under his coaching?
