yea i know a ton of saints fans where i live but also a lot of falcons, and titans fans. personally i'm not a fan of any of them, I am a huge patriots fan! If mississippi got a pro sports team, i would immediately get season tickets and go to every game no matter where they were located which would probably be jackson, or biloxi.

I do not attend Alabama, but have a lot of state pride. Also, I was raised a Bama fan. To the OP, good thread/first post.

Both. I love the state of Alabama almost as much as I love The University of Alabama.

Wait long enough and they will end up in Bay St. Louis.

The Dome is getting old and I doubt Louisiana will be willing to build a new stadium.......

How can people root just for Bama out of state pride since Auburn is a peer public university. The same goes for Mississippi.

Alabama is the flagship university for the state. Auburn is a landgrant. Folks are drawn to the flagship, I guess.

Flagship school vs. Ag school.

This phenomenon occurs in just about every state where there are two such schools--Oklahoma, North Carolina, Iowa, Texas, Kansas, Oregon, and on and on.....

For whatever reason, Louisiana combined the two, which is why you are unfamiliar with this phenomenon.....

Preference. FWIW, I root for Auburn every game except the last. The only dislike I have for Auburn are a lot of their fans here, and my dad(Auburn grad) during the streak.

born somewhere...coundn't really travel great distances until 16. Forced associations with people. I'm not ashamed of alabama by any means, but its not the greatest place in the world by any stretch of the imagination, so I guess I just don't get the state pride thing. Do i shy away from telling people I was born and raised in alabama, no, but am I more proud of the choice of univeristy and degree i acheived over where I was born...of course. I know this sounds closed minded, but seeing it any other way is somewhat shocking.

this.

I too was born and raised in Alabama, and I'm trying to get the state pride angle. I'm not slamming the state but I don't think there's alot to be proud of.

Alabama has more navigable waterways than any other state in the Union. It has more fresh water species of fish than any other state in the Union. It has been home to important historical events, and is full of people who will stop and help you change a tire on the side of the highway during a rainstorm. Those are just a few I figured I would throw out.

in this situation The state pride angle is just stupid. It would be one thing if it was like one big school and a smaller school, but not when you have two relatively equal universitis.

Well, there are people who pull for ALL their state's teams, but, especially in the SEC, you almost HAVE to take sides.....and most--though not all--the people who are not alumni of either school in the state will gravitate towards the flagship university of the state, especially in cases where it is more successful than the landgrant school, which is the case about 90% of the time....in fact, I cannot think of any exceptions to that rule off the top of my head.....

Still, nearly 75% of people in Alabama are 'Bama fans. I would think the same is true in Mississippi and Georgia.

Ole Miss has a very large LATENT fan base that comes pouring out of the woodwork any time a team shows any real promise of competing at the national level (which is not very often).

In Vaught's day, Ole Miss had the same level of active support among non-alumni in the state that Alabama and LSU still have.....and will again, I am sure, if it ever gets to an elite level again.....

i'm from Tennessee and have very little state pride for...so, I guess I'm school pride since I go to LSU. Although, I love the Louisina people and the culture down there...

Nobody has the majority in Mississippi.
About 30% of people are State fans
About 20% of people are Ole Miss fans
About 10% are Southern fans

and the other 40 are bandwagoners of whatever SEC school is kicking arse at the current moment.
