If you're looking to live in a socially "progressive" area, perhaps you should reconsider your decision to settle in the Deep South.
It wasn't my decision.
I have a love-hate relationship with the South. I feel a personal responsibility to elevate it and the helplessness of never being able to do so.
At worst I will be in Atlanta or Nashville.
This place is my home, and I'll always come back to visit.
It will likely never be to stay, though.

Sorry Charlie, but the UofA does not represent the state of Alabama. According to your logic you should be rooting for Alabama State University. Who, FYI, went 4-7 and lost to Grambling and Southern.
No, the University of Alabama does represent the state. It is the flagship univeristy of the state of Alabama. In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a "seminary of learning." Alabama was admitted to the Union on March 2, 1819, and a second township added to the grant. On December 18, 1820, the seminary was established officially and named "The University of the State of Alabama."

Solution: Secession followed by dictatorship. Enjoy.

You're right, I don't know the entire state.
I can draw references from My experiences and the people that I know.
I'm from Southaven, a suburb of Memphis, and at about 45,000 people the fifth biggest city in the state. I have a lakehouse in rural Union county. Beautiful, hilly area, dry county, backwards people. The lakehouse in rural Union county have given me the opportunity to get to know New Albany and Tupelo fairly well.
New Albany has a cool downtown area, Tupelo reminds me of country Southaven with no Memphis. I've met good people from Tupelo. I've been through Batesville, Senetobia, and Holly springs. All of which are on the way to Oxford. All of which are North Mississippi Hell Holes. My Great Grandmother lives in Tallahatchee county in the delta. Nothing that isn't absolutely awful in the delta except maybe Ground zero in Clarksdale. I've been to the casinos in Tupelo. My Grandfather used to take me out into the Mississippi Gulf coast on his boat when I was a kid. I've driven through Jackson, West Point, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Grenada, ect. down to Destin. I've taken a train from Memphis to New Orleans. I've taken a train from New Orleans to Orlando. I've driven through Mississippi just about every way you could imagine. I've seen what there is to see. I've met a bunch of people from everywhere. And it just doesn't measure up to the other places I've been. I lived in Atlanta for a while.
I went to school in Memphis. Mississippi mostly sucks. The government statistics don't lie.
I like busting your chops.
I'm not reading all that.

It's truly one of those things that could have happened anywhere, but since it happened at Ole Miss, it will take a long time to live down.
A la the Barn burning down.

re: State pride or school pride?
I haven't read all the trash talking that I assume is going on, but if Ole Miss or USM are playing someone besides state, I am rooting for them. Growing up in MS and having moved back recently, I take the state pride route. Now if it's anyone else in the state, I turn the page in the newspaper, or the channel on the radio.
I just re read the first post. I pull for state because I grew up going to games there, and graduated from there in 06'

Have you ever been out of the south? Do you really think that NYC, Chicago, Denver, LA or anywhere else doesn't have places that aren't shite?
Yes MS does have the poor, the uneducated, and the anything else you can come up with. Guess what, so does everywhere else.
I've been to Oxford many, many times and I gotta be honest the town of Oxford outside of the square really, really sucks. Hate to burst your bubble but you really don't know what the hell you're talking about.
As to the original post, I was born in TN, moved to AL when I was 7, and the moved to NE MS when I was 11 (I think). All my family lives in AL except for my parents and brother, they are still in NE MS.
My father was an Alabama fan for his entire life and I have been as well. When we moved to AL the house behind ours was where the starting strong safety (at the time) lived. His name was Ricky Tucker. My father and his father were very good friends and when Ricky would come home he would call me to come over and as a 7-8 year old that was an amazing experience. He would also bring players home with him and I'd get to meet them. Some that I remember were Steadman Shealy, Major Ogilvie, and the main one that I remember was E.J. Junior.
My college career started at UNA and ended at Miss State. I am a MSU fan but I always have been and always will be a Bama fan. So, for me it is all about school pride.

If you look for your local college football team for state pride, you must have an epic-ly shitty state with not a lot going for it. Here's looking at you Alabama, Mississippi.
Since Tennessee is the second most popular state in the South after Florida(which doesn't really count), I'd say I don't need a college team to be proud of my state. We have pro teams, anyway.
I'm proud of my school.

My question is, do you pull for your team out of pride for the state they represent, or for the school? And did you actually attend the school in question?
School Pride
I actually think it is weird for people to be super fans of schools if they have no family ties or didn't attend the university.
quote:
To answer my own question, it is most definitely state pride for me. I did attend Alabama, but my love for the football team was established well before that.
I think it is also weird to root for Bama and not Auburn also the other way around if it is for state pride. They are peer universities and both public schools.

What a stupid post. Big population makes a state great?
And, by the way, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia all have bigger populations than Tennessee has......
