Alabamas fight song mentions beating GA tech. so it obviously was a big rivalry at one time? and what made georgia tech leave the conference. they played every year for a long time what were the reasons. did ga tech or alabama want to end it?

Well, they're in-state rivals. Back before Bobby Dodd pulled em out of the SEC, GT was a pretty relevant program. The series record against Alabama is actually pretty close.

My guess is that after pulling out, there just wasn't enough heat to try to keep GT as a regular game while still playing UT yearly out of division. Not sure.

Georgia Tech left the SEC while throwing a crybaby fit about Alabama.

Bobby Dodd was a sniveling whiney bitch and was hated by LSU because he didnt think Tech should travel to Louisiana took the state threatening to pull coca colas contract to fix it but he also would not travel to the Mississippi schools at all. Then he whined because the Bear was better at cheating than he was and left the conference. The balance of the sec likely hates tech more than UGA does.

Because Bryant wasn’t about to play those sniveling engineers after they left the conference for complaining about Alabama.

Leaving the SEC is the #1 reason but the Dodd-Bryant feud is basically what led to GA Tech leaving the SEC. It started over an injured GT player which Dodd called a cheap shot and accused the Alabama player of intentionally trying to hurt the GT player, wanted Bryant to suspend him (which he did not) and then Dodd wanted to overturn an SEC rule about scholarships- Bryant said he'd support Dodd and then didn't show up to the meeting ( ). The injury thing was the starting point, though, and it just got completely out of control

Dodd and The Atlanta Constitution waged a war against Bryant/Alabama because they became the premier SEC team, and pushed Tech down the ladder of relevancy. Couple that with the Chick Granning/Darwin Holt incident, and that gave Dodd an excuse to cut and run. Hell, Dodd saw the writing on the wall!

He thought those states were too backwoods for his team to travel to and felt you didnt have a nice enough stadium. He was a jerk. Probably at least partially why Bama played at legion all those years.

An 18-Time national champion doesn’t have any rivals. Stop the nonsense.

First a Bama player injured a GT player by breaking the bones in his face and knocking out several teeth. Then the Tech coach wanted to change the recruiting rules at the time and Bear said he would support, but the AD of Alabama voted against it.

Tech hated Alabama because Tech was winning against Bama during Bama's dark times in the Ears era before Bear Bryant. Tech in the 1950's before Bear was 6-2. But after Bryant took over, Bama was beating Tech; Bama was 6-2 against Tech after Bryant took over.

Tech hated Bear Bryant so much that he had to wear a helmet when the team played in their stadium, because the fans threw whisky bottles.

Picture of Bear Bryant with helmet at 1964 Georgia Tech game.

Absolutely correct

One other reason was greed.

Ga Tech was money hungry and they did not like sharing the Bowl Revenue and other money with their conference brethren.

They reasoned that being an Independent would be better for themselves because they would keep all their revenue for themselves.
Very shortsighted view. At first it was good for them but as time went by, they became less relevant.

So after joining the Metro Conference and wallowing around for a while, they found a home in the ACC.

They will never BE allowed back in the SEC.
They made that decision in 1963.

Bryant was 6-1 vs Tech. Tech's only win was a 7-6 Alabama failed on a 2 pt conv late.

Yup, 'Bama leads 28-21, with Tech winning the last meeting in 1984.

It's incredibly strange that neither team has scheduled the other in almost 40 years.
