Bama will be fine for a couple of years. Wouldn’t surprise me if they promote from within and keep on trucking a la Ohio State.

The difference will come in consistency. Can any other coach take Bama and make them compete for a natty every dang year?

Unlike Arkansas, whoever it is if he becomes head coach at BAMA it's a guarantee, he will have at least a 10 win season and in Mike Dubose's case even an SEC Championship. (see 1999) What were you expecting, Sam Pittman?

They probably thought that after Bear too, and ended up spinning their wheels for a bit with the exception of the Stallings era.

The Alabama administration was also a clown show for most of those years. If Greg Byrne is the man leading the search I have no doubt he will make a great hire.

I think a lot of rivals are a bit too hopeful about the immediate decline after Saban.

I think this is accurate. Not sure how long a complete disaster could survive on what Saban built, but you get a mediocre coach at best, and they def would able to ride it out for longer than they would anywhere else. Keep in mind his time was much shorter at LSU than he has been at bama, so hes leaving behind something much stronger. Miles inherited the foundation/beginning of what he could have built at LSU and was able to succeed for a while based on his recruiting skills, and at first he wasn't as stubborn, controlling and arrogant as he became. Next fellow at Bama would be getting almost a finished product.

I trust Byrne.

His Basketball Hire was a GrandSlam and His baseball hire has been solid too.

Good point. I wasn’t a contemporary of these events but everything related to me indicates that the late Bryant years were a mess in recruiting and coaching. Perkins inherited more of a rebuild than many who look back at that era remember. I mean Bryant let Bo Jackson slip through his hands because he wouldn’t play him at tailback. So a lot of the stuff I’ve heard from old-timers kinda tracks.
