That sounds like denial.

It is a much better job now than it was in 2008. I appreciate the effort though

I'll bite. How is Tenn a better job today than it was in 2008? I'm having a hard time understanding this.

The only positives I can see is that with Butch, you proved that a new coach would be given the chance to overhaul and have time to turn the program around.

There are a myriad of reasons, but I don't feel like writing a book so I'll just post some quick points.

Stronger Ad- In 2008 there was very poor leadership within the Ad from top to bottom.

Relationship between the Athletics side and academics- there was a rift between the two that wasn't allowing football to prosper. That has been corrected.

Renovations and Facilities- UT had fallen behind badly in the facilities department. Since then Neyland has undergone phase 1 of renovation and completion phases have begun. Opening of the new training facilities, practice fields and student dorms. Facilities are now among the best in the country.

Finances- We are in a much better position now

Recruiting- the state of Tennessee has seen an explosion in high school talent and it's only gonna get better

- Your facilities are finally catching up to the rest of the SEC

- Your financial situation is better because of the SEC Network dollars you're getting (like the rest of the SEC)

- Your AD's strength will be defined by this coaching hire

- You're competing with (and losing to) other SEC programs for that infusion of high school talent in the state.

So, I agree that you're in better shape now than you were in 2008, but so is everybody else. Tennessee has done nothing to elevate itself relative to the rest of the conference. That is why Tennessee is not a great job anymore. I know you will disagree and downvote, but you are wearing orange colored glasses.

The facilities have been caught up since the completion of the training center

The financial situation is helped by the network, but also income vs. expenditures

You have no clue about the ongoing sin side the AD and the rift there was with the academic side.

Butch Jones has done very well instate. Not so much this year because everyone knew he was a dead man walking. The mid state talent boom is a huge plus for a competent coach. Tennessee is a better job than it has ever been. And I'm not going to downvote you because you aren't very informed in your argument and your opinion means less than nothing.

This is a very pro-Tennessee and anti-reality response. Personal attacks on me won't make it any better. I live in Tennessee and know enough about it to know what I'm talking about.

merlins isnt leaving, he has a cult following, a nice paycheck and very low expectations where he is. nothing about the man screams ambitious enough to take on the UT rebuild job.

If UT hires Dan Mullen by my calculations the UT is placing a value on the national championship by year 4 at around 60+ million dollars. This is buyout costs + HC salary and a 6% rate of return. Personally I think UT should pay Dan Mullen a guaranteed non-refundable signing bonus of 60 million and then pay him a dollar salary each year with no buyout. We'll see how much Dan likes Starkville after 1 year at TN and money in the bank. I'd bet he takes the money and goes back to starkville and coaches for only health insurance and state employee benefits

By the way, that "sweet spot" in the equation would put Mullen as a Top 5 paid Coach in all of college football. At least 1.5x what Butch was making. And that doesn't include any buyouts for Dan or payoffs for Butch and staff.

As Congressman Everett Dirkson once said " a billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money"
