having an odd number of teams wouldn't have been the worst thing for a couple of years. Why did the SEC office panic there?

Having an odd number of teams would not work.

1. NCAA rules are that if a conference wants to have a Football Championship Game, there must be two equal-sized divisions in which every team within that division plays each other during the regular season. An odd number of teams would have likely caused the conference to lose the ability to have a Championship Game in football.

2. Even if the SEC had been able to receive a waver to still hold the Championship Game, scheduling in all sports would be an absolute nightmare with an uneven number of teams

3. The SEC office knew that adding Mizzou was possibly not an ideal situation.... but there was no great fit for that 14th team. Mizzou was judged to be the "best" fit of the possible teams, and it was decided that adding them along with Texas A&M (a great fit) was better than not adding either.

4. I actually know for a fact from an SEC staffer involved in the negotiations that up until the very last minute, the SEC was very close to extending the offer to Georgia Tech rather than Mizzou. They ultimately went with Mizzou.

Simply put, TV money in the midwest. I like Mizzou in the SEC. It adds a whole new dynamic. I disagree with them being in the SEC East though. They need to finally push Aubrun over to the east and take Mizzou in the west.

Is Kentucky the midwest too or what?

It would have been practical too.

Send Auburn and Alabama east. Send Vandy or Kentucky west. Now you don't need the stupid permanent cross-division thing, and LSU doesn't have a permanent L on the schedule.

Would Georgia Tech accepted? Would UGA had allowed it?

I don't really have a problem with any of the additions but:

UT or Okla > Mizzou
Clemson > USC
UT > TAMU

Seems more like a Cardinals, Royals, Chiefs kinda town.

As anyone from Missouri will gladly tell you. They're proud of how little their state cares about college sports. Not sure why that is supposed to be ignored when it comes to eyeballs on TVs

Not sure. It was my understanding that the SEC had four or five options for that 14th and final team, and all or at least the minimum number necessary of SEC Presidents were on board with whatever the decision the SEC went with.

I would imagine Georgia would be against bringing in GT, and I don't know this for sure, but that might have been the deciding factor that caused the SEC to go with Mizzou instead.

All I know is that the financial benefits of adding Texas A&M to the league were so great, adding a 14th team to the conference even within the current footprint was considered still a huge upgrade for the SEC as a whole. The main goal was to do whatever it took to get Texas A&M in.

Missouri won the east their first year. What every happened to them is on the Sec. The big 12 basically gave you a team capable of making it to the Sec title game.

We are 6th in enrollment in the SEC with enrollment going back up to where it was, so we could move up to 5th or 4th pretty soon so this joke is getting pretty old and makes people look pretty misinformed but you keep throwing out those old jokes that make you look intelligent.

This board takes US News college rankings pretty seriously. Having a discussion with them about a college where the discussion doesn’t have anything to do with football is amusing and irrelevant.

If you keep reducing the size of your stadium (headed to 65K then you might actually get a sellout.

This is inaccurate. Georgia Tech was not in the fold. Nor was West Virginia, which has been speculated. If in fact we did not get Missouri, our lone target at the time, we would have gone with a 13 school roster and done creative scheduling.

UF/UK/USC wouldn't have allowed it either.

You can blame UF's former president. He was a huge fan of Missouri.

I don’t want to play Missouri every year.
