re: Since its basketball season isn't Kansas a more historic basketball program than Kentucky?

I mean Adolph Rupp literally came from the University of Kansas to Kentucky, by that fact alone, yes, in terms of history. Now, once Kentucky got rolling under Rupp, they sustained success and relevance more consistently than Kansas but Kansas is more historic.

Another reason to avoid reading when this name appears.

Only because Kansas invented basketball.

I think this is everyone’s idea of all time top programs outside of Kentucky:
1. Duke
2. Kentucky/Kansas
3. NC
1. Duke
2. Kentucky/Kansas
3. NC

kansas might've invented basketball but Kentucky perfected it.

Kansas and North Carolina would be not bad as a package.

This is correct. UK is Kentucky. kU is kansas (note the k in kansas should never be capitalized when referring to kU).
All of the old Big 8 conference schools abbreviated with the State initial followed by the U: MU, OU, CU, NU, kU. The other three were schools with "State" in the name, and they abbreviate as you would expect: ISU, KSU, OSU.
I don't know the backstory, but It is too consistent for that not to have been intentional.
You are correct and I believe it was a league decision that occurred when Colorado joined the Big Six in 1947. Despite the fact that these were all "Universities of" whatever state... The league wanted their acronyms to be the "state followed by the U" as you described.
We generally have to explain this several times a year on here when somebody comments about how "stupid" it is that these schools acronyms are the way they are.
Ironically, pretty much all of them have stuck except for Nebraska. Locals up there don't say "NU" consistently like they used to... the younger ones say "UNL" these days.

Kansas and North Carolina would be not bad as a package.

Bierocks are gross but nothing wrong with a good pirohy and some cabbage with noodles

3 of kansas' NC's were awarded y a baker (who lived in kansas.)

UNL? I guess that is closer to what most big 10 schools do. The exception there is the I schools. Illinois uses UofI, Iowa uses Iowa, and Indiana uses IU (I think the only school in the Big 10 that does it the way the old big 8 schools did).

No- Mizzou is not short for MSU, which would be Missouri State. Mizzou is not and has never been referred to as Missouri State.
